My friends like to say "Joe, there's something wrong with your thermostat". They're probably right as I'm consistently out there with less clothing on than most of them. When they see me actually wearing tights, they wonder if conditions are survivable. OTOH, when it's hot and humid, I sweat to the point that I have to be careful to stay hydrated lest I seize up like an engine w/o coolant (it has happened).
Crap, if I wasn't headed to work I'd have gone back out to the trails now. I love night/snow rides.

Finally a dry day. Local trails however were still such a quagmire even the dog was looking where to place his paws. So, on the road for a shortish ride, 32 miles. Not bad.

Hard to believe this kind of weather the last week of January... but i'll take it.
39 miles @ 15.4mph in 46* temps. The only bummer was the strong NW 16mph wind.
Weather looks good through the weekend and then it drops.

so true. so tempted to drive home from work, get bike, drive back to work with my bike & bike home, then tomorrow bike to work & of course drive home with my bike tomorrow night. my partial commute thing
but it's so much easier on a Sunday night / Monday morning rather than mid week cuz I get home so late & Sundays I can do at least one ride in daylight. & I'm waiting for a new headlite battery but can use some backup headlights
but the evening & morning temps will be above 30 degrees easily & I got a new very thin Smartwool Beanie I'm dyin' to try out

Ahhh, the stars (work, weather, "stuff") haven't been lining up. Another measly 20 miler on the (wet) roads, best I could manage. Windy as heck. Thankful for full fenders I can quickly pop onto my winter bike. Trails must still be a mess.

Trails were surprisingly dry in Bethpage considering all the recent rain. We meandered around all the newly marked trails, but did not go north of the park, wary of the usual muddy areas. My bike actually enjoyed a net loss of accumulated soil.
Was that you I caught a glimpse of, Steve?

Today was a gift.... base layer, jersey and bibs only. It was in the mid 60s with a strong wind, but it was warm.
43 miles and I really enjoyed it.

Flounder about for 2 hours in Bethpage St. Park with these long staves attached to my boots*, check. And reward myself with a venison cutlet sandwich and a Spaten dark, check.
*I am told some people do something called cross country skiing, similar to what I was doing but much more dignified.

37 miles today. I tried the BP trail but it was too icy so I stayed on the streets. Most were clear but a few of the back roads still had slushy sections.
The bike is filthy and covered in road salt, so I brought it inside to give it a good cleaning.

Mine had dried on road salt and sand/grit. The jockey wheels and chain really needed a deep cleaning.
I have about 400 miles since the last cleaning, much longer than I go on my road bike, so it was time. But all the previous mikes were in dry conditions with a few damp rides. But this was before the snow and ther ws no salt/sand on the roads.

Cabin fever setting in over here.......
I was considering getting out on the road, but kept thinking about finding that random spot where a big old white pine throws a shadow onto a damp spot of road, and just like that you're on a table with the doc next to you looking through his bin of screws for the ones he's going to drill into your collarbone.
So I walked the dog on the well trod trails near home & thought, "This is rideable." I went home and looked at the MTB, with its Finnish made tires mocking me with the words "DESERVE THEM!" printed on the sidewalls, and there was only 1 thing to do.
Drove up to the Tower Loop trail and pedaled..........oh, at least 200 yards. There was 1 set of footprints, no snowshoe tracks, no fatbike tracks. It was basically un-doable.
At least it was enough to scrub all the dried dirt out of the treads.
Spring is coming.
