The appallingly frigid weather continues in the desert, so I rode the almost-40-year-old Rans recumbent down to my weekly shift at Rusty Spoke, carrying 16 water bottles in the front bags for the staff & customers.
The southbound ride was fine until the unmistakable sound of high-velocity decompression. And then I saw the "Flat Protection System"... didn't.
I'm not saying the offending object was sharp, but it not only went through the FPS layer and some cords, but right through the Spinskin underneath like it wasn't even there. Never did find the puncturing item, though.
A fully laden recumbent isn't the most cooperative bike when the rear wheel needs work, but somehow all was muddled through, the tube swapped, the tire remounted and pumped, the water delivered, and bike work was performed in a sufficiency - including patching a rather large hole in a 27" tube.

Three good hours around the farmland 20 minutes from town. The Campagnolo Doppler shift levers aren’t holding well on either side and their days are numbered on this bicycle.

Planned on riding 20-30 miles today but smoky and AQI pushed into the “Very Unhealthy” zone so shoveled mulch instead. I know you are all clamoring for some pics but alas, none taken.

Very nice weather today in the high 60's and clear after a couple of weeks of rain and cold. Took a ride to up to Alma on the bike path and came back on the back roads over the top of Beaver Creek about a 1000 feet total climbing from Fairplay to the top of the route from 10,000 to a little over 11,000 at the top over 10 miles or so and a nice easy 5milles downhill .back to home.

Did the usual Cedar/Leelanau loop (somewhat over 40 miles). Ugly winds. You could have timed me with a calendar. My legs feel seriously hungover right now. Not sure if riding tomorrow even if weather permits. Cooking some post-abuse pasta now.
On the positive side of things, I think I just might have gotten rid of an annoying creak in my saddle. Seat post head needed cleaning and a lube.

18 miles around town today. Rode back through the traffic for the Duke - UVA Super Regional playoff game. I actually rode the Cinelli in support of the Blue Devils today. I bleed Duke Blue and thus will not be supporting the home team today. I had planned on going to this game but got busy and glad I didn’t as Duke got crushed. Not to worry, I’ll go to the rubber match tomorrow. Riding through the traffic I did an almost complete track stand to let a lady through the cross walk and the sheriff deputy told me I need to come to a complete stop. I did an eye roll behind my sunglasses and rode on.

A friend/bike shop owner's collection.
Maruishi Speed Nippon 1963.
When he got the frame without parts 40 years ago, it was repainted black.
The fork is Katakura's.
Lugs are Bocama.
C&Vers would know what components are on it.
Brooks Professional big rivets and Simplex steel post with the badge.
3ttt flat bars and CLB levers and Nitto Dynamic stem.
Mafac racer calipers.
Rims are,,, I forget.
He built it as a French style promenade.
He says he will change tires.
Simplex single speed guide.
Bluemels Club Special mud guards.
"Look at it carefully. No cracks. No dents. No breakage. Bluemels in perfect condition are very rare. You can't find them now", he said.

Got in my longest ride yet for the season... After an extremely wet winter we've been graced with a relatively mild start to summer here in central California, and this week it's actually been raining a bit and rather chilly! Highly unusual for June. Had some decent headwinds in the morning but I got where I was going. I didn't actually take a photo of the bike today, so I threw on in from the other week. Guess it's about time to decide which Eroica CA route to sign up for!

31.25M on the Manufrance today. 70F, partly cloudy, so optimal conditions. I didn't even need any water till about 25M. Rode 135N into Richmond and returned via Rt. 201.

Took two bikes out around the little town today just taking an easy day while sorting out these rides for the first time. Quad on the repaired leg not too happy with me today so good day to take it easy. The Olmo felt really great under me but the RD was acting up. Got home and still having issues with it as I tried dialing it in. The Klein worked flawlessly but was no as smooth feeling under me as the Olmo. I was a little afraid the small Olmo was going to be stiff and uncomfortable so glad that was not the case.

A bit rainy today to took a quick ride to Alma on the bike trail. With the rain the past week or so things are starting to really green and some wild flowers are finally starting to bloom.

35 and change on the 72 PX-10 today Summer is creeping into the Catskills, it hovered around 80F with humidity increasing. Not a combination that serves me well unfortunately. I could feel it towards the end which I cut short by about 5 miles. Still had some lovely times:
There’s a nice market about 10 miles out in Palenville. It’s popular with tourists as it’s one of the few good food stops around. I usually stop for an iced tea.
Anyone that grew up in the 1960s within a certain radius of the Hudson Valley will know about the Catskill Game Farm, a family attraction that was like a big petting zoo. My memory is of standing in a crowd of young deer with handfuls of corn kernels, a bit intimidated by their hustle to get some of that corn. It’s long gone but the name lingers in.
This wetlands off Kaaterskill Creek near High Falls (there are at least two within 30 miles of each other) was abuzz with wildlife. The 350-400-million year old Catskill Escarpment is in the distance.
I stopped and went down a short embankment along the Plattekill Creek near one of my favorite picturesque spots to wet down my head to cool off. Oddly enough, there was a closed book along the bank, with no title on the cover. I opened it: “7th Heaven” seems fitting for the location but Amazon shows a James Patterson “Women’s Club Murder Myster” with that title. I don’t quite know what to make of all this!
Feeling better after soaking my head.
Said hello to this filly just a few miles from home. She was not impressed by my vintage Peugeot.

The serial number is 0506 which I’ve interpreted to mean 2005 build. I doubt it’s much older than that. The fork is 1” threadless steel with engraved Masi flat crown, original to the frame.

72.0 miles today in recognition of my 72nd birthday. I have been doing this "ride your age" thing for several years now.....gotta' wonder how long I'll be able to keep it going.

I just got out for my usual loop, and managed to beat the miniscule ammount of rain we got on sunday. I took my "Original Gravel Grinder" out for a spin both days/ I changed the cassette to something a bit tighter.
Does anyone do that Pumpkinvine Trail ride in Goshen IN? I signed up for on the spur of the moment. I know it probably isn't as fancy as some of those big classic bike erotic rides most of you do but asI have done a ride like this in a long time it should be fun. A very nice day (after a drought bending rain yesterday) with clear skies, cool temps and humid air. Over the past few months I've been focused on my tour of the Erie Canal Trail so I've been working on weight of gear to bring, managing weight and handling weight. Only been riding my Voyageur and my Fuji TSIII. The Voyageur fully loaded when I pushed off probably weighted 65lbs or so. As documented elsewhere, I rode that configuration 240 miles that week. Today was the first time I've ridden my Raleigh Pro since November as it's always put away for the winter. Rode a favorite route down the Schuylkill River and back, 32 miles. Wow, just the bike! I felt like I was floating. A quite gossamer day.
The handlebar bag is empty. Its easier to put it on the bike than weave the steel holder out of the cable housings. Must have weighted 25lbs with water and bags. Lovely day.
