Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

And we're missing a bolt for the rudder, gonna have to hit Ace tomorrow.

Let me know the dimensions of that bottom batten. May be able to help you as I have some batten material from an old boat of mine.

I'm getting soft -- I used to tough it out and ride nearly year round, from sub-freezing to 100 degrees. Or I'd get up real early and squeeze in 20 miles before work.

It's been in the mid-90s every day for the past couple weeks and I just can't make myself do it. I also can't make myself get up early. I also can't bring myself to get on the trainer.

I got a little burnt out on cycling a couple years ago after overdoing it for a few years so I took a step back. Then the pandemic happened and I just... didn't do anything. So now I'm kind of basically starting over from scratch which is frustrating when you remember how you used to be able to ride 80 miles with the fast guys on Sunday morning and you think you can still do that but then you can't.

If you don't really want to do the work or you're just burnt out on it then maybe just do some very easy rides when you can. If it sucks and isn't any fun why bother?

I went through a similar thing during the last few years I was working. Got to where I was only riding on the weekends and many times I was so exhausted from work by Friday I couldn't ride worth crap on Saturday. I've never had any discipline with diet or training so that combined with getting old really conspired to ruin cycling for me.

After I retired it took months to get to where I felt good on a longer ride. I'll never get back to where I was in my 50s but I enjoy riding again and look forward to club rides. It helped that I joined another club that had shorter Saturday rides that were focused on fun and staying together instead of dropping as many as possible.

Also when the pandemic shut things down I rode solo for a few months, had never done much of that before.

Got a 29 on the back of my bike, with a 34 in front. I can climb everything I do around here but there are times it would be nice to have a bigger cookie back there.
Our last trip to the Eastern Sierra I took the triple bike with a 30x30 low gear. I think I'd like something new with a 34x34 double, maybe a 34x32.

Thanks for the kind offer, but the battens are fine. I was just going by that awful photograph and I thought that slight fold about 1/3 of the way up the mainsail was from a broken batten, but nope, it's full length.

I burned out on cycling back in about 2002, after a couple big years that culminated in joining a local club and riding their Saturday (63miles) and Sunday (45 miles) rides every week, rolling out of bed at 6:30 so I could ride from my house to the start and get there before they took off. I really enjoyed it, but I think there was a certain level of anxiety around riding in a group that just over time ruined my enjoyment. I did the usual layoff when the rains hit in December, and then the next year I just didn't find myself on the bike. Took a couple years to get back on. And since that time, I've ridden almost exclusively solo.

Bonus quackery this morning. I was getting my infusion and the witch doctor saunters in, looks at my knee, and said, "when are you going to let us give you a shot in it? " (he never asked before on that knee)

So in addition to having mouse genes pumped into me, I had 15 cc of yellow fluid drained from my knee, and a shot of steroids to replace it. Hoo boy.

You really need a 25 around here. It's not flat like central NY.

Had to wake up all week at 3 am for work so figured today why not. Ride went well but the cooler temperatures made it really hard for me to warm my legs up. I took a break at 40 miles and then again at 66 miles. I made the mistake of trying to stretch my right quad. Never again, it instantly tightened up and I had to struggle the rest of the way home.

I had a hard time breathing this morning but I remember this happening the last time I rode in cooler temperatures. Also I always feel like crap first ride back from work.

First tropical storm of the season. With thunder and lightning. Two of the three dogs are in panic mode. There was standing water this morning and it will be full on flooding tomorrow morning. I am thrilled to no longer be living in Mérida, where the downtown streets flood for sport. But I am decidedly not looking forward to five more months of this. The good news is that the roof repair we did in the off-season seems to be holding.
