Classic & vintage road icons....?
Of course, everyone has their own personal ‘icons’ & grail bikes, but what (road) bikes have the kind of iconic status of the Peugeot PX-10? A late 60s- mid 70s white PX-10 is immediately recognizable and conjures a nostalgia even among folks who haven’t ridden a bike in years. I have a hard time coming up with other models that have that kind of iconic singularity. An all-chrome Paramount, maybe? A celeste-green Bianchi (though that isn’t a specific model….)? What other near-instantly recognizable classic & vintage icons are there?

Although I have no pictures of it, my blue mink/silver Raleigh Professional that I bought in 1973 comes close. I rode mine for 27 years, and even won a Canadian ITT title on it when it was over 25 years old. Sadly its life ended when I crashed it in a road race and crumpled the downtube in 1999. I still have that crashed frame but the components moved on to another bike

Various icons....for various reasons.
Perhaps the recognition factor across the board?
Quite often, you just mention the model, and people know.
Cinelli Super Corsa for elegance, longevity, quality.
Puegeot PX-10, but also UO-8, both for different reasons.
Pinarello Montello, as much for precision and quality as bad decals.
Colnago Master for that tubing, once it took hold.
Colnago C40, for being a landmark bike, and Pari-Roubaix, and Mapei
Centurion Dave Scott Ironman. You don't really have to say Centurion.
Bridgestone RB-1, as much for the discussion of who was behind it.
Trek Y-Foil, because if they've seen one, they remember.
Any Pegoretti, but a whole different icon, altogether.
Specialized Stump Jumper, a Ritchey by any other name.
Paramounts, but there are so darn many!

Could just as well be a Grand Record, Le Champion or Champion Team....All are Iconic. Have had this bike a long time and ridden it in most of the Western U.S. states. Don

So is the frame but the head badge, Universal brakes, seat post bolt and handle bar are all good. That, to me, makes the harvest a bargain at twenty bucks. The frame and fork will be dumped in the dump on Wednesday.

I don't know what the model would be, but I think an early Cannondale should be on the list. Yeah, Klein may have been first/better/whatever, etc, etc, but pretty much everyone recognizes a Cannondale immediately.

Quite a few of the bikes in those Raleigh catalogs are seared into my brain! I did buy the semi-iconic Gran Sport in the lagoon blue with white panels and rode that for a long time. Much later, I picked up a mint International in the copper paint, which is probably between semi-iconic and iconic. There is still a part of me that would like to have one of the blue mink & silver Professionals, though!
From the catalog that I held onto for so long... the Mark IV Raleigh Pro.
After I got my International, I lucked into a 753 Team frame! I think it's just as iconic as the Pro, and since it was widely raced, probably even more so.
Here's mine, and it rides just wonderfully!
