Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I would have been on the trainer either of those days. That, or in front of the fireplace watching a sporting event. Or something else (but, you know, family forum).

I have a bunch of friends that are Bills fans. They’ve been insufferable the past week. I get it, it was a horrific thing to watch and witness, but they’re all acting like they were personal friends with DH.

The coverage of the game made it even worse. To lump this in as a tragedy the city of Buffalo had to endure with a mass shooting and 40 people dying in a storm was shameful IMO. But maybe that’s just me.

I had my monthly visit to my retina doctor. "Looking good, see you next month."

Anyway, I'm so tired of the trainer that I may risk a bike ride this afternoon. Supposed to be 35-40 with winds under 10 mph.

I get it. I feel for the guy and his family, but no more than anyone else, and not nearly as much as those close to me.

There are 805,000 people in the US that have heart attacks every year, one every 40 seconds. DH is really no different than any of the others.

(My wife tells me I'm going to be stricken to hell for things I say.)

Got it fixed. Went to the store and bought a new bb plus the tool to remove it. Was about to take it off, and read the outer shell. The demensions matched the one I just bought. So then I measured the spindle, and they were the same. Put the crank arms back on and used a little elbow grease. They went on problem solved.

Now if I can just find some cable cutters The Lance will be complete.

Question. I think I will use the mavics on it for now. The old shimano wheels have 28 mm gators, and they barely have clearance. Plus the rear wheel has a terrible wobble now. Now sure how that happened.

To put a 9 speed cassette on an 11 speed free hub I just need one spacer correct?

My 401k plan won't let me set the contribution rate above 75%. I wonder both why, and how many people have tried.

I should hit the max in my second paycheck of March.

I was scolded here long ago for saying very similar things.

Now, on the other hand, Bills fans being called "insufferable" is funny compared to certain other fanbases.

From the IRS:

Plan-based restrictions on elective deferrals

  • Your plan's terms may impose a lower limit on elective deferrals
  • If you are a manager, owner, or highly compensated employee, your plan might need to limit your deferrals to pass nondiscrimination tests

Query - which is worse, a scolding on this forum or going to hell?

Oh you forgot the wiggle-it-just-a-little-bit part of the procedure. I saw the rubber mallet and figured you must've given a little tap with that, but I guess not.

I dunno much about 11s road freehubs, so you'll have to Google that

I suggest you make the contributions even throughout the year.

But, then if the market makes a big jump in April, he's missed out.

Of course, the same can be said if there is a big drop in July.

The market always goes up/down.

I am not aware of a financial "ratchet" system that will only go up but catch itself on the down....so best advice I know is even it out.

Read about buffer ETFs - Innovator Defined Outcome ETFs: The First ETFs that protect against losses of 9%, 15%, or 30% (innovatoretfs.com). About the closest thing you can get to a "ratchet."

In other market news, another 9 shares of my DKS hit a sell limit this morning. About to push the remaining 3 sell limits up a couple bucks each so I don't wind up selling them all.

Looks like you can buffer the losses but at the expense of sometimes buffering the gains. In the long run, probably still makes sense to ride out the ups/downs.

No thanks.

I assume you are referring to the fan base I am part of?

I’ve seen far worse treatment of opposing fans at MSG or in the Bronx than ever witnessed at Gillette or Fenway

Speaking of 401Ks. I checked mine yesterday, and last year I lost a Dogma F12 with Dura Ace Di2

I haven't checked mine since August. Not gonna think about it 'til I sit down to do taxes.

Yes, that's true. You save on some losses and give up some potential gain.

We have part of our retirement in that type of fund as a defensive measure, but our "guy" moves in and out of them as the forecast changes. They have been a useful tool. Certainly not something to put an entire portfolio into.

Dollar cost averaging only helps you on the contributions, but does not protect you from losses on market swings after the contribution is made. Still not a bad plan, but cannot be the only plan.
