I'd love to know the frequency of this happening. I'm guessing it is hundreds of time less likely than you taking a yuge **** on a thread.

I have a few, 1972 Windsor Profesional, 1982 Medici Pro Strada with Campy SR, 1973 Super Mondia Special, late 70’s Kabuki Diamond Formula which I bought new and was the best bike I could afford at the time. Some of my bikes that are not top of the line are, to me, just as desirable, like my 1975 Colnago Super, I believe there was a model a little higher up.

My submission is a Nishiki Cervino, 83 I think. I haven't been able to date it and when I purchased it it was frame and fork only. I built it with a mix of Suntour and Campagnolo parts.
Some believe it was built by Cervelo or Colonago or Olmo but it is Italian and rides very smoothly.

The Megatube Ti was the top dog from ‘95 to ‘97 but I sadly could not afford one. It took a few years and a lot of free time trolling the internet for it but I finally found one complete wit Record Ti group.
The MAX tubed Proto was only offered in ‘90/91 and only as a Dura Ace equipped bike for ‘90. Even with employee discount, I could barely afford the frame, thanks to a trade in on a broken SL frame. Cost being an issue I initially built it with a mix of new and used Chorus.

A bit of a shabby state but this is my best full period correct version of the Pinarello Montello. Not as nice looking as the example above but it shows all its time and Patina.

Hmmm..... I can quantify that with a few of my 90's bikes I think.
The mid 90's Giordana XL Supers were the top of their line those years for sure. Scored two of them.
This has the "much better build" with the C.F. tubulars, SR/Record groupset and such.
This one is just 11 speed Athena and weighs about 2 lbs more than the other one. But this one feels better under me on the road than anything else I have.
Then for sure the 1999 Trek Y-77:
Found as a NOS frame and built up with 11 speed Ultegra and sporting some nice Reynolds wheels right now.
Then there was this 1987 Schwinn Paramount:

Then there was this mid 80's Cabestany, their top model.
This is it during it's "gravel phase" for me.
And I think this Pinarello is the top model for the year from what I was told. Haven't found it in a catalog yet so I really don't know for sure:

Custom Super Mistral Fastback had all the bells and whistles Holdsworth offered in 1973. Originally came as an all Nuovo / Record 5 speed, tubulars, and Cinelli saddle.

Oh, it was an "upgrade". The previous owner had the bike gone over by Waterford, repainted, and then built up with modern components.

One thing I will say about some of the earlier comments. I think most of us realize "top of the line" quite often does not equate to "best" or "best riding". I can't see how any of this would be an ego trip. It's just the manufacturer's call on where a bike falls. I love all my bikes.

And an 84 Turbo F/F being built up as a Mad Max wasteland racer. Middle finger build to the component companies and their constant planned obsolescence decisions also. I think only a couple of components come from the same company brand. One of the derailleurs and the hubs are the same brand, but different groups. The other derailleur and the crank(but not the chainrings) are from the same group/brand. That's it. Getting it ready in case I have to go into Thunderdome.

I love all the bikes--- both the "creme de la creme" and the mutts which ride far better than they should.
My two favorite bikes at the moment are a humble Peugeot PFN10, which was Peugeot's entry-level race bike in the early 80's, made of Vitus 172...
And this one, which was considerably above entry-level:
Motobecane TeamChampion
They are both just delightful to ride, but I worry a lot less about scratching the Peugeot....
