ok - lets see if we can go step bystep so i dont screw something up here
i take one of these:

https://www.google.com/products/catal...MAE#ps-sellers

and bang which side?
bang the axle end?
what should desired outcome be? i.e. - what is coming out the other end once i do this?

(remember i am having trouble visualizing the componentry in the BB having never worked on this type of BB - heck - who has?)

Shouldn't have to go to a 2 pound one , but if harbor freight (and chinaimports) is all you have..

There is also the softening of a hardwood piece , the idea to keep from damaging the axle

Remember Newton? for every action , there is an equal and opposite reaction?

sorry to pester w minutiae - but what side am i hitting - does it matter
am i hitting the hammer to axle end - or am i using something in between to buffer

as i mentioned - help me understand the piece breakdown in there
there are no cups right
so its an axle sandwiched between to bearing units? like these?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bicycle-Hub-...8#ht_944wt_905

should the axle be a 128mm looking like this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TP378-Action...#ht_613wt_1139

yeah i can do that - but i am trying to learn - i want to learn but when i asked the bike shop to be involved in the work of course they have no interest

now bob - you have been helping me along - why stay involved in the thread to just tell me to go to the bike shop?

Start with either side it matters not. Place a block of wood over the end of the spindle and give a few good FIRM wacks. The opposite bearing and spindle will fall out of the opposite end you hitting. Check back when you have got this far.

ok - info update
i can see where the play was coming from as the one bearing set
had some wiggle to it
the other i punched out w a seat post

so the spindle - i think is good to use
lets hope - cause where am i gonna source that

but i need to replace the bearings
ideas - leads?

now once i do this the next step will be reinstallation
i can see where you could damage the bearing set by hammering in - so i need ideas for exactly how to press it in?

thanks inadvance

oh - also wondering how to 'center' the bearings / axle - the bearings i must be pressed to the axle - but how to center the axle so as to have the arms (especially the drive) where they need to be

yep - thanks - sorry i'm a little tentative - like most of us have - i've botched up stuff before and i would always rather ask an additional ? or two

and this is a unique situation - i went to one of my LBS yesterday w the bike - and the guy had never done a similar BB overhaul before - so that says alot

Those bearings are available at most good auto parts stores, or run down to your local machine shop.

The bearing will be pressed all the way onto the spindle as the shoulder on the spindle will stop it from going on too far.

ok - cool - i'm sarcastic too - just didnt understand bobs response

btw - the bearings i need are:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bicycle-Hub-...8#ht_944wt_905

correct? - i took the measurements and they match

btw - i get that the bearing will only go so far onto the axle because of the axle ridge
but - whats to stop the 'whole package from being pressed to far left or too far right? feel me?
edit 3:
i guess a point of reference in lining up the axle would be the groove for the snap ring / circlip
btw - its hard to imagine that the circlip does much to actually hold the bearings in place - does the taper narrow towards the middle of the BB shell which in turn keeps the bearings pressed against the axle ridges?

edit:
btw - wonder where you could source the 128mm square taper axle - i was looking w no luck - i think mine will be in good shape but just wonderin

edit 2:
thinkin ahead - to press the bearings i had an idea i think someone mentioned this earlier in thread
c clamp with deep walled sockets and washers?

Those are the bearings......

Tap one bearing onto the spindle, and tap or press the entire unit (bearing and spindle) into the bb shell till there is just enough room to get the snap ring in place. Now press or tap the other bearing into the other side of the bb shell and onto the spindle till again you can get the snap ring on. Done! Grease the bb shell good before pressing in the bearings.
