Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My friend posted in the general section. He has custom wheels now, but the spokes keep breaking. He was thinking about super team wheels, but I wanted to recommend something that had a strong recommendation.

take the wheels to a shop. Have them respoked and tensioned.
Repetitive spoke breakage is a sign of under tensioning.

Yeah. "Custom" doesn't necessarily mean "Well built". First set of custom wheels I ever had made (well, RE-made, because I just had him rebuild the old hubs with different rims) needed re-truing BADLY after 100 miles. The ones I had built for the Battaglin went 5000 miles before they needed a slight adjustment.

EDIT: NOT the same guy.

When I got back to riding regularly in Dec 2019, I weighed 225, and bought a used set of Shimano Dura-Ace C50s for $500. They did fine as I burned 40 lbs off my @$$ over the following 6 months.

To me the most important thing is the skill of the builder. A wheel built well will outlast a crappy one. Take it from someone who breaks lots of wheels, spokes, and hubs.

I bought a grease gun today. And a tube of grease. I can't get the spring to compress far enough to get the cap on. I'm sure there's an insider trick or two I am unaware of.

The replacement wheelset also has a rotational tick. This time I'm certain it's a spoke thing. So I flipped it over and tightened the entire non drive side, and then trued it up. Vamos a ver. This is the wheel I built with a mix of double butted and straight guage spokes. I was desperate.
These tubulars ride like a dream on the Paramount, while giving a quite harsh ride on the Trek. A stiff frame vs a flexy frame.

If you can stretch a little, get a set of Hed Ardennes+ RAs. If you can't, look for a set of lightly used Ardennes+ GPs that came as OEM on an expensive bike. There are quite a few around. Both are very nice wheels and virtually indestructible.

Did you clean and lube the spoke junctions?

Electrocution and stabbing activities are done. Results are in. I don't have nerve damage but I do have nerve issues pointing to L4/L5. (I kinda new that)

He prescribed something for the nerve pain and I get my second epidural steroid injection on May 7. He said I should be able to ride without pain on the meds. I thought to myself; why wasn't this prescribed earlier so I could be riding and be pain free? Then I realized that it doesn't work that way. So, next Wednesday I'll be riding weather permitting. He said 45 minutes to start. Hopefully if the injection works I'll be off the meds and good to go by ~ May14. We shall see.

Correct. Even though I didn't post about it, Facebook figured out, as I now see this kind of stuff in my stream.

I did not. I'll do that when I get some light oil. I'm about out at the moment. But those nds spokes were very loose.
