I picked this up the other day, I traded a guy a case of cheap beer for it.
I've never heard of the brand before but it was sold by a local Schwinn dealer near here in the mid 80's.
It looks a lot like a few older Nishiki bikes I've seen before.
The frame is small but the bike rides big, I'm 6ft2 and I'll have to lower the saddle to ride it.
The tires are Cycle Pro skin wall tires, older but in mint condition.
Its got Shimano derailleurs, 'Roots' thumb shifters, and Chang Star brakes.
The crankset is SR. The rims are Araya 26x1.75 with dimpled spoke holes. The hubs are marked sealed with the same decal I've seen on some mid 80's Raleigh bikes but these are painted black .

Has anyone heard of a Hunter Cherokee before? I've seen others like this around but most have been blue or black.
Its a pretty close twin to a Nishiki Pueblo or a lower end Raleigh from the late 80's.
It rides great, rolls forever. The Pedals, saddle, and grips are branded Avenir.

The Shifters which say Roots in the center look a lot like Shimano shifters from that era but they don't say Shimano on them anywhere.

They're 990 mounts, so anything that would fit that. With this particular brake, a Dia Tech (fly copy) beauty , it depends totally on the pads. With kool stop salmons they are a little grippy but controllable. With KS clear pads, they are an on-off switch, and with the pads you see they are a little weak.

I dunno if that '04 Jekyl counts as 'Vintage,' but here's some old-school American aluminum:

1996 Cannondale F-XXXX

'96 F-1000 Frame w/ '06 DL-80 fork
3x7 LX/XT
The shop-built wheels have XT hubs, 36-h Mavic 230's with 14ga DT's. They are way tough.
Switched to the riser from the flat bar, and added the rack for commuter duty.

Full suspension, disk brakes; I'm gonna have to say Modern, even if it is a 26"

I agree with the possible exception of the single fork strut. I think that idea went the way of the Dodo.

Lefty forks are still around on Cdale's new bikes.

1995 "Huffy" Scout Chromoly

I have been trying to find info about my old bike, but apparently, I'm the only one that ever found value in it. I'll try to post pictures later, but now just trying find someone else that has one.
So, don't laugh, but it is a huffy... I know, but listen. I've had this bike for 23 years and it is still in excellent shape. I started riding again last fall and have done a ton of upgrades to it, but was hesitant because everything still worked pretty well. In 1995 I saw this Huffy at Wal-Mart, but it stood out from the rest. It was $200!! Which is cheap for a good bike, but crazy expensive for a Wal-Mart bicycle in 1995!! It is a Huffy Scout with a Chromoly frame, V-Brakes, and apparently pretty good quality Shimano components. I rode it hard on horse and four wheeler trails for 3 or 4 years, then used it on the street and occasional offroad trails in college. Then I got married, had kids and it hung in my garage for close to 15 years. I've recently put almost $300 in it, upgraded wheels, cassette, chain, derailleurs, seat, shifters, cables, and some new brake pads.. This made it a 21 speed, but all the old components worked well except the rear wheel needed spokes adjusted. I obviously love this bike. I hope I wasn't stupid for rebuilding it. I ride it atleast once a week now and enjoy every minute of it.

What could be stupid about rebuilding something that gives you so much pleasure?
Good for you!

No doubt that's a cool (and clean) bike, but vintage? It has a WEBSITE printed on the chainstay protector!

I was about to run screaming from this thread in protest, until that nice Fuji Thrill calmed me down.

You want vintage? How about from the dawn of the MTB age when people rolled their own, like about 1982? I picked up an A-D Inter 10 (Reynolds 531) road frame that had had the seat tube squashed in a workstand. Got a fat 26" to fit in the rear and set about building a bike around it. Cruiser fork, canti braze-ons by a local sculptor/metalworker, MX stem with a motorcycle dirt bike handlebar, and most of the stuff that moved to my Cimarron frameset about two years later and on the other coast. This is an early pose when it still had Huret Jubilee downtube shifters, before the SunTour thumbies arrived.

Picked up an '83 Schwinn Sierra out of the junkyard a while back. It's on deck for an overhaul after I do some housekeeping.
From what I understand, this is one of the last Chicago-made Schwinns, and their first attempt at a "mountain" bike. It's really just their Sidewinder frame with canti bosses. It was the shifters and brakes that caught my eye in the junk heap, I'm guessing that the market was too new for low-end thumb shifters and cantis. That saddle is a hog, ain't it?

Picked this up this morning for $20 after finding it on CL for $40 over the weekend. Took the chance to lowball and got it. I figured no one knew anything about this brand (and neither did I), therefore he probably wasn't getting any offers. Sadly it's a size too big for me but it's going to be a keeper after I rebuild it. This has some 80's mtb goodness and will probably be my oldest mtb (if it's older than my '89 Novara Ponderosa). I'll start a thread with more pics.

Here's my '92 Bianchi Project-3 I picked up last spring. I cleaned it, tuned it, and converted it to be my "rainy day commuter", but I have been off road with it a few times. The tires are semi-slick Nashbar 38s; not much of a dirt racer, but with the 700c rims, this thing rides smooth on the road. I really like the Surly Moloko bars I added.
