Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How Was Your September?

I had one of my better Septembers in quite a few years, logging 794 kms and riding 21 out of 30 days.

In fact, in terms of number of days ridden, September has been my best month so far, riding 70% of the time! I also rode 21 days in July, but July has 31 days (68%).

It's been a gorgeous month for weather ... we hit 26C (79F) yesterday and 25C (77F) today. Better than summer!!

From a road bike standpoint, it was a pretty good month. Participated in my first MS ride where I completed a 75 miler, in 94F heat with high humidity. But the overall experience riding with my club was outstanding. Set a personal best time on the local gravel MUP with a Trek 4500. Then I found a pretty nice back-up bike on CL, an 04' Specialized Allez Sport (Tiagra 9 sp) for $250 in great shape.
All in all, a pretty good month.

Although you did not complete EC, I would say that just attempting it was a big win. You should consider your September pretty good.

Despite having some back and hip problems early in the month and suffering from this virus that is going around I managed to eke out just over 900 km and only missed a few days of riding.

This weather has been glorious and is supposed to hold so if I am feeling better I am going to do a few metrics this coming weekend to kick off October.

Mine was very bad... after doing over 450 miles a month for 3 months, august was pathetic with 218 due to bike being broken. I was hopping to do better in sept but I fell from the bike and it was my knee being almost broken this time. I ended sept with 318 miles.

I did however a 75.3mi on sept 9. My longest ride so far, a personal record.

overall pretty enjoyable. i had two injuryies, pulled my left popliteal muscle(behind the knee and top of calf, i'm a nursing major) and sprained my right ankle, i dance as well. anyways i got some really nice base/training miles in, ~350, and alot of memorible miles of beautiful days, great climbs, amazing views, and lots of exploring this aera(south bay area, California). i had alot of fun on my road bike.

machka, did you do any brevets this year?

my sept has been nice, but i'm sad that fall is here. starting on thursday we're scheduled for about six months of cold rain... but i've got full fenders & wool socks so i'm ready.

sept stats: 1,440 km (894 mi), 10 rides total

merlin, it sounds like you gave it your best - next year you'll smash the ride! EC sounds crazy.

My September was like June, July and August 100%. Have now ridden 131 days straight. 3972.14miles.. No excuses, no reason why, just enjoy pedaling. I am sure it will end for some reason but until then, It's great!! That thing about needing rest sorta makes me laugh!!

24 rides, 1,008 miles, 59 hours in the saddle, 29,990 feet of climbing....

October is my favorite month for riding but I'm tapering off for weekly races starting on the 7th through the 30th, so both volume and intensity will be reduced.

Very good.

Major riding goals for the year accomplished. The month ended on a positive note with a fast century on Sunday, and I still had plenty of legs to ride with a guy 10 years younger than me on Monday.

Now that the month is over, I can say it. No flats all summer. No time lost to injury. No issues with sore knees. This is the first time in a very long time that even one of those has been true, so this has been the best summer ever.

Mine was great! I did two centuries (my first and second) and rode 575 miles for the month, which is the most I've done since I started riding in July. Plus the weather was mostly beautiful!

September was dominated by a week long camping trip to the Eastern Sierra (Robinson Creek near Bridgeport) and the start of school. In terms of biking, I've adapted to living carless quite well, and am not feeling inconvienced by my 15 mile commute. No rain might have helped that along. I routinely am doing 180-200 miles a week, with last week topping the list at 210. I finally conquered a hill that had me beat on four previous attempts... so I'm gaining in strength, endurance and possible simply mental fortitude. Highway 46 from Hwy 1 to Oldcreek road near Cambria California, if anyone knows the hill I'm talking about.

Very decent. I got the bike back, crashed my mountain bike and was out for a week; then I rode like hell - i.e. a lot.
It ended on a high note so I suppose that's all that matters.

More running than riding, trying to get in shape for a race this weekend. Actually, this past weekend (friday night to monday morning) was probably the first time in my life my running miles eclipsed my riding miles. 24 to 20...

But oh yeah, rode down to Baltimore from NJ with a buddy.

As far as fitness goes, I've never been faster than I have been in the last 30 days. Just amazing. I cracked all my power records, then went on to punish the hell out of a Cat 3/4 field in a crit, taking a prime and the win, along with several long solo attacks against a 26mph field.

Just amazing.

The bad thing about September was Hurricane Ike. Among other things, it caused the postponement of an "A" race for me: the Texas State Road Championship. I can't do the reschedule, so I missed out on an upgrade opportunity of 10 pts, and I had just beaten the Cat 3 state crit champ in a crit, so form was confirmed.

Still, it's great to see that I've learned how to coach myself to a really high peak, so next season is going to be phenomenal.

Cycle Oregon, a century, a bunch of other rides totally almost 1000 miles for the month AND a new and exciting relationship with someone who shares the passion. I couldn't have scripted it better.

Good for you Rad.

But if you were scripting it wouldn't you have also gotten your bike back from the painter?
