I was recently driving through Louisville, KY (actually on the bypass) and the signs were in Km and miles which is what the interstate had for a short time in the 70s.

I remember going with my brother in his 4-year-old Simca 1000 to Toledo OH to find an apartment for graduate school. We took the PA Turnpike. West of Harrisburg, it does A LOT of up and down. The Simca couldn't manage the uphills at the minimum speed of 45, so we had to put on the hazard flashers on every single uphill. Us and the trucks.

The first time that I changed the factory tape on my Propel, I was amazed by the finishing of the tape at the ends near the stem. It had been tapered lengthwise and then skived thin so that it laid perfectly flat with the outer edge of the finishing tape tucked under the bar tape. It was a work of art and I could only imagine the effort that went into it. I now wish that I had photographed it to try to duplicate it.

The cranks have bearings fitted on them. You screw cups into the BB threads, then fit the two splined cranks into the cups, then screw the two cranks together with an enormous allen key.
(I think that's how it works. I let my LBS do this for me, rather than by even more tools - Octalink crank extractor, FSA BB tool, Campy UT cup wrench, enormous allen key)

Mine always comes out looking the same. But I've never had polka dots. I sometimes do the figure of eight and sometimes not. But it's easy to change, at the lever. If it's not coming out how you"d like, change your method until it does. It isn't rocket science.

I was describing the tools my LBS needed to change over my 2006 Bianchi from 2006 FSA cranks and BB to 2020 Centaur cranks and BB. And, yeah, Octalink IS old news. I think it was the beginning of the end for your average bike owner who does all his own work. Next thing you know, every Tom, Dick, and Harry has his own BB standard, and each has its own tools. I don't know how bike shops keep up. It's like doctors and the proliferation of nearly-identical medications with extremely subtle differences in efficacy and side effect profile. On the plus side, making a mistake with BB standards almost certainly won't kill anyone!
