Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hit 44 mph a couple days ago on a decent on my Saturday route. When I was vacationing in California 12 years ago I went over 50 a couple times. It's freaky going that fast, my mind was very busy playing some very graphic "what if" scenarios on my mental movie screen. It was very hard to keep my hands off the brake levers once I got over 45 mph.

I had an old steel Fuji. (12 speed) that used to speed wobble @ 18 mph if you went no handed.

Texas has nothing on Colorado, climbing-wise. When I lived in Boulder (and the tri boom was in full effect), I'd drive to Austin for work once a year or so and then visit relatives in San Antonio. They're late risers, so I'd do a race in their area on Saturday, spend the day with them, and drive home Sunday.

One of the races I did there was the Greater Gator, in a lovely little town called Boerne. They had one climb on the course, called Heartbreak Hill. I mean, it was a climb, but not that awful. People from Dallas and Houston would walk up it, or once I saw one fall over.

In 1988 I did my first organized ride, a 50 mile route in the hills of Ventura and Ojai. There is a smallish climb of about 2.5 miles and 300+ feet. People were walking, falling over, and sitting on the side of the road. I was shocked by the carnage.

Huge difference I know. But, you guys are in the "Hill Country." Heard Fredericksburg area has some challenges.

In the tricolor era, it was called 600 Ultegra, but Ultegra wasn't stamped on any of the parts, it only appeared on the boxes.

But today, a patient who is a retired ENT and on long-term paxil (paroxetine) said he wants to consider getting off this because of his concerns of it contributing to dementia (which he does NOT have). I did not really consider it to be a potent anticholinergic, care to opine??
Certainly not a big-time anticholinergic, but the worst of the SSRIs. I think the dementia risk from anticholinergics is really an interaction with individual risk factors, e.g., genetic loading or metabolic syndrome, and in the absence something like that or early signs of cognitive impaiment and assuming he needs the drug to manage a significant issue, I would try and reassure him. That said, and as you obviously know, old people and anticholinergics don't mix.

While we don’t compare to Colorado, there are plenty of challenging climbs around here, from a couple hundred over a half mile to over 1000 in 2.5 miles. 2 weekends ago at that gravel fiasco there 9 climbs that were 600+ over a mile or two.

Its pretty easy to go fast here on descents and can hit 45 or so on several without pedaling.

Yeah but "Hill Country" is different from "climbing". We don't have any long slogs of the sorts in CO or CA; we have rolling hills that involve carrying speed and short bursts of power. I can (could) ride for a few hours and get decent elevation without dropping into my small ring because it's always a few percent up or down, or a short steep thing.

For reference, it's enough that AG was concerned about certain races (pre-pandemic) to the extent of seriously considering weekend trips to Maria to get some actual climbing training.

32 km today. My longest ride in quite some time. Poco a poco. I did not have to shift, either yesterday or today.

Myt comfortable upper limit on a road bike is low 30s. On a fully loaded touring bike it's upper 30s. Back in 2016 I was on a long descent in Montana. Around 7 miles. Not technical, wide road, little if any traffic and great sight lines. I shocked myself by getting up to 43.

edit: this is a 1/4" thick steel, for reference - something like a cookie sheet isn't going to do much.

I tried my old stone on the grill, but it was too large for the Weber, and the coals starved for air and could never get hot enough. Maybe I'll pick up a smaller round steel, but I might also just get an Ooni.

Yeah, I'm loving it on the Litespeed. The one thing I'd say is that the shifting in front is just as instantaneous as 7800 STI with 7400 FD, but takes more effort to go to the big ring. But it back, it's *clikclik* and you're in the gear.

I can't say that it's all that much better than the 7000 I have on the Canyon, but maybe marginally better.

Checking the Shimano Manuals page the 6207/6208 generation of 600 was the last of "600 EX", and "600 Ultegra" began with 6400, which paralleled the 7400 Dura Ace. 6207/6208 were 6 speeds, and 6400 was 6, 7, and eventually 8, with STIs.

I used to put a big rectangular stone on our gas grill, back when we had a big gas grill and were eating bread at home. It worked great and the kitchen stayed cool.

Nowadays, LSS sometimes makes cauliflower crust pizza. Not the same at all, but edible with enough stuff on it. We also tried chickpea flour: bleccch.
