The weight is without pedals and cages. With pedals and cages: 20.40 lbs.
The build did not begin with weight savings in mind, but as the parts became available cheaply, I picked 'em up.
It was not an aggressive search for light parts, and IMHO, a 20-lb Ironman is generally possible.
I can't tell the difference from any other 23 lb Ironman, but it's nice to know it's light.

56cm Tange 1 frame/fork: from sloar, right here on BF C&V.
Modolo brake levers: from mapleleafs-13, right here on BF C&V.

Some of the parts were amazingly cheap:
Bontrager Race Light seatpost: $20 from a local friend.
Bontrager Inform RL saddle, $18.80 new on eBay plus $10 shipping.
FSA Team Issue Carbon Pro crankset: $48 on eBay, no rings.
Shimano 5500 Octalink BB: $25 new from the Performance clearance table.
Nitto B115-420: $30 new on ebay.

I did have to spring for the new 5700 FD, RD, and new 7800 shifters.
Everything else is from my parts stash, which is thankfully thin.
It's a funky mix now, and I like it. The shifters are Robbieproof.

UPDATE: I finally found the little rubber plug for the stem. That was really buggin' me.

I also put sensible shoes on it. The Previously shwn Spinergy Spox were a little out of place.
Thanks for the feedback, folks, that brought me to my senses, of a sort.

Don't worry, the Spox went on my gravel bike.
Robbie - I began stripping my 88 Expert down today based on some of your instruction on page 18 of this same thread and some you tube videos. I am planning on fixing up the 56cm and seeing how it works fit wise, if it doesn't seem to work out, I will try to sell/trade and get a 58.

In reference to the above post - I love the look of the build you did on this bike. Knowing that I am planning on riding an Ironman on it, any upgrades you suggest first over the 105 components on my bike - or are they more than sufficient? I know better men than me have ridden them hard and far, so if they clean up well I would like to keep em. I am not trying to spend a ton of money and will be replacing all the cables, housing, tires, and seat for sure. Maybe a tough question to answer, but I appreciate any advice you, texas, or anyone on this forum may have.

I managed to strip it almost to the frame today in a brief hour when my 2 year old and 1 month old were both napping...thank God for little miracles. May be a slow process at this point, but I am stoked to be doing it.

Anyone care to share decent color matches for the Classic red and white? I'm fairly stocked up Testors enamel through one of my other hobbies.

Testor's Red is pretty close, the paint pen and the enamel bottles. I found a Duplicolor contraption at an auto parts store that had a ballpoint, sanding point, and brush tip. The color was dead on. The key, like any paint, is preparation. Against the dark metal of deeper scratches and nicks, the paint will show up darker in color, so one would be well served to prep that part with light grey primer, or even white.

Thickness is almost always an issue with touch-up, so there is another, painstaking way to do it, using spray enamel, which is much thinner. After prepping the touchup area, use some white or grey enamel, sprayed into a paper cup, to touch up the area with a tiny brush, or a toothpick, or even a q-tip. Once the white or primer drys, you may need another coat, because it's so thin. This is good. Then, same method for applying the color. Thin coats, repeated. I use a cloth dabbed in mineral spirits to wipe off excess, a q-tip dabbed in mineral spirits the same way. When the paint has dried for at least a day or two, I do some rubbing with compound, often with a q-tip rolled in the compound, to get excess paint off.

All touchup is a roll of the dice, and the only way it works is with tedious, careful patience.

In reference to post 1027. Just a reminder the 88 master came with full 6400 tri color, including Headset and Bottom Bracket. The only model to do so. Some other year models included headset but never BB.

I'm so glad that people are here to correct me. Makes for a stronger information source.
I wonder if I or someone should start a comprehensive thread on just the OEM Ironman "as delivered."
Go year by year. I've done that, but it's inaccurate.
It seems now that we have the attention of people who know each and every year.
Would be nice to get a complete set of details on each year.

My initial impression is just to start a thread called "Ironman frames and components" and ask for info, and only OEM pictures of parts or components. We have this thread for the rest, the hot rodding, etc. Any suggestions?

By the way, one of you youngsters is making a tri-bike out of an Ironman.
Check out the Cronometro front and disc rear on the FS thread by Force.
A careful coat of paint on that rear disc and that is one bad set of C&V tri-bike wheels.

Excellent idea R.T.
It would allow everyone to use it as a point of reference novice, and experts alike. Going year by year absolutely. I would suggest asking everyone to post only 85s first month then 86 and so on. So hopefully keep them in chronological order. However that would seem to be quite an undertaking. Perhaps same idea but a separate thread for each year? Still a lot of work.
one thing for sure I wouldn't visit those threads near as much as I visit this one. Which is alot.
As conservative as I am, I thoroughly enjoy looking at all those interesting and unique CIM. They are all very inspiring. Thanks everyone. Keep them coming.

Done. Please feel free to go to it and add whatever you want. Or PM me and I'll update.
My memory is deteriorating fairly quickly, it seems, so it's good to get this up while I still remember something.

Those of you that know exactly what came on a specific year/model, by all means help us out, if you can.
I have an OEM '89 Expert coming, so I'll figure it out on that one.

Now, if I can just find my car keys.........

Okay, so yesterday: The Tour of Richmond, also sometimes billed as The Richmond Gran Fondo. Maybe 1500 riders, corral start, 101 miles. Was supposed to meet up with forum member Seypat at the start, but he discovered he had a flat upon arrival at the start area and thus started 10 minutes later. So we met up (Pat's on the right) at about the 35 mile mark:

Yes, it really was THAT COLD...as in three layers up top, a buff AND helmet liner, two pairs of gloves and tights cold. Day warmed up a little over time and we had a lovely ride. My 10th (and last) century of 2015.

Anyway, true story: at about the 50 mile mark, we're going down a fairly steep descent at about 33mph, and I look over at Pat (who's face appears next to the meaning of 'running commentary' in the dictionary, God bless him), and he's eating a bag of pretzels with one hand and riding with the other. Unflappable. Also, has an incredible capacity for food. I had to tear him away from each rest stop.

Why is this here? Pat was riding his Miami Vice '87. I think he was supposed to go for a 12 mile run today.

Iron. Man.

More pics of 88 yellow fade in its original state. It's very different now. Pics coming soon.
Notice OEM buffalo suede is still visible. And that computer was mounted at time of original purchase. Thanks for looking.

The first bike I ever built was a chopper style, back in 1975 when I was 12. I found an old 26 inch wheeled frame and took parts from my "rode till the wheels fell off" 24 inch wheeled dept store 10 speed. I removed the handle bars, pedals and sawed off forks. Then put them, and some 20 inch wheels on it. And painted it this blue.
I found this on the forum. Hard to believe it was rattle canned. Man takes me back to 1975 the way markwesti CIM takes me back to 1986. Very, very cool take on a CIM.

I took the liberty of transcribing the above into a spreadsheet on google:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...gid=1927924249

I'm sure there are errors. What I'd like to do is open this up to editing control by "the brain trust" to be determined. I never did one of these online spreadsheets before, so I have to figure out the sharing function. I think I'll need emails to send editing invites.

Review and Comment before I proceed.

I think this document could be used to wrangle together a lot of info in one place, including images (already started, see year tabs on bottom of sheet).

Additional info like known touch-up paint options struck me as one thing that would be helpful. I keep seeing that issue raised in the forum.

After looking at the Google Sheets help file, apparently I can invite people to have editing rights, but they need to have a Google account. If you have a Gmail account PM it to me and I'll add you.

Otherwise, I can just edit on the fly based on posts here or PMs. Either way works for me. I think the specs sheet is mainly at the tweaking stage anyway.

If just requesting edits here: if I should edit a specific existing box, reference the location, i.e., A4, B6, etc. It's also easy enough to add additional rows of info or additional sheet pages with other related info that would be useful to have in one place, like the image examples in the annual tabs already there.

Just let me know.

Got it. Another cut-and-paste error on my part.

Re: 6208, I think 6200 covers the series and all it's variations. I know this is an issue from year to year (maybe even within years) with the 6400 series too. For instance, I have some hubs that are 6400 and others that are 6401. I'm sure the 105 stuff is the same way.

I agree. I only mention it because 6200 was split between indexed and non indexed.

For those who wondered if you can go Campy on an Ironman...
For those who find just a frame....

This one was $85 on eBay, beat all to heck, the red/grey '85 and boy, I wish it had been in decent shape.
Still, a powdercoat and decal job later, a little bit of black and yellow, and it was a nice riding bike. I moved it on to a BF member.
I actually think it's been posted here, sans decals...

27.2 seatpost, not supposed to fit. Chinese saddle/wrap came in a package deal for $19.
The headset is a 6500, decals from VeloCals. Those are Look A3.1 Ironman pedals, by the way.

6200 was split over so many years, it was the commonly referred to Arabeseque, and the 600 EX, which was the non Indexed and indexed systems. the Trek catalog refers to it as N600 (new 600?)

Here's "The Man" hoisting a 1988 CIM purple haze. Posted this before. (Better pic this time)
Points to be noted: The 88 came in yellow/white fade, seafoam(green)/white fade and red/white fade on the expert.
And in the master of course in smoked purple fade, however it came in the straight yellow/white fade as well.
My master 52 cm came with 28 spoked front wheel and 32 spoked rear wheel reportedly what Dave raced at the Ironman.
Also that is a smooth seatpost however lighting makes it look fluted. Ok later y'all.

Iron. Man.
Ok. Since no one commented on this. First and foremost WOW!. The indomitable spirit yall demonstrated with that cold is to be commended. Maybe people from the north are just heartier than the rest of us. And ten 100 milers in a year is awesome.
You know that riding and eating at over 30 mph is a testament to rider experience (miles ridden) and those CIM are made for that (comfort, stability, and long rides). And eating a lot says you got a long run tomorrow.
Not sure how well y'all know each other but riding together in conditions like that makes y'all blood brothers.
You know I can handle the heat and humidity as well as anyone but that cold whips my butt. In fact the only training ride I ever called someone to pick me up was due to cold temperature. So yes very impressive indeed.
Sidenote: We had a cold front come through cen-tex that weekend as well, it got down to high 80s. True story. And today high of 85 predicted with small chance of rain. Unseasonably warm (should be in 70s). Later Dudes.
