Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1978 (or so) Raleigh Grand Prix. Purchased at thrift shop for $22.95. Has all original Raleigh built components. I did swap the Brooks seat that was on it.
It is so much fun to ride!

Just got my first road bike since high school. It's got a flat bar so a couple of people have mistaken it for a hybrid. It came with clipless pedals but I don't have shoes yet, so I put my trusty clips on it.

Got it for $500 plus $35 shipping. It's got Tiagra and 105 components. I couldn't beat the price.

Nice bike. How do you like the flat bars? I haven't ridden a flat bar street bike since I was a pre-teen.

This is my 1981 Miyata 110, 12 speed - steel forks/frame, chromoly seat post. The components are all Shimano except for the shifters which are Suntour racing. Everything on the bike is original except the pedals, the Cateye computer, and the tires. My claim to fame on this baby was biking the state of Vermont from the Canadian Border to the Massachusetts State Line in three days (with a very fully loaded bike). Pedaling through the Green Mountains was NO fun.

Bought it with my first ever loan. $300.00

Zfargol.

You're from Israel right? I read an article in the Jerusalem Post a month or two ago about the high number of cyclists that have been killed (by cars) on the roads there. A bit scary!

Hello from Israel

Yes, I'm from Israel. Road (and mountain) biking has become a very popular sport here. We had some tragic incidents and it is a bit scary, but we can't give up on our loved sport, so we try to find relatively safe places and times to ride at.

My blast from the past

After purchasing a new road bike in 1999, I sold my Benotto that I had puchased new in 1989. But, I began to regret parting with it. Three years passed then I contacted the person I'd sold it to and offered them a full refund and I'd take back the bike. Lucky for me they agreed. The bike originally was white with red trim and it had a mixed bag of Shimano and Modolo components. The frame was built by the Italian Benotto firm prior to going belly up and being picked up by a mexican conglomerate. The Benotto name is now owned by a mexican company. Anyway, A complete restoration was done. The frame was stripped and sent off to Indiana to be treated and powder coated. Replica decals of the original Benotto ones were also ordered. Gradually, the various components that had been selected for the rebuild began to arrive. It was a learning experience and a lot of fun.
The handle bars are original as is the frame, all else was replaced.

The Setup: DuraAce bottom bracket, front derailuer, rear derailluer, cassette, chain, shifters. Shimano 105 brake calipers, and HolloTech double crankset. Shimano Aero brake levers. Shimano 105 headset. Performance SPD Road pedals. Mavic Open Pro wheelset on Ultegra hubs. Vredestein Volante' tyres. SelleItalia Flite Genuine Gel saddle. The frame is 58cm center to top, chomoly hand lugged and bronze brazed.

The finished bike was weighed at the bike shop at 21lbs 2oz.

Oh, the pictures were taken before I was able to locate a seat post that would fit the frame. I'd like to thank Lickton Bike in Chicago for their help in getting the seat post.

There's a learning curve to this type of bike. (I guess you could say that about any bike) The hand position feels natural, but there's not a lot of variety. The brake levers are very easy to reach. The rapid fire shifters take a little getting used to: For the front dreailler the index finger is used to move to an easier gear and the thumb is used to move to a harder one. For the rear derailler, it's the opposite. I'll just have to keep on riding until things become more natural.

Here's a couple of more pics of the 15 year old Benotto that I rebuilt. It makes me feel good and get happy every time I ride it.

Nothing like lugged steel for a fine ride. Same for the Prolink saddle.

Here's my babe and will be ready for a ride in the next few days if it were not for the problems with my 7800 DA brakeset. Both recessed nut can't even touch the bolts/stud. Components: record (cranks/bottom bracket, shifters, cassette 12-25,front and rear derailleurs), ITM stem/handlebar, ritchey seatpost- came with frame and will be replaced, velocity spartacus pro wheelset and dura ace 7800 brake set built on a trek 5500 frameset. Will post another photo when all parts are installed.

Nice ride! But, I don't understand the DA calipers? Why note get a set of Record off of eBay or CampyOnly and sell the DA on eBay? Then have a set of brakes where the pads can be set at the proper toe-in as well as being matched to the rest of the group. Really like that Trek with Campy gear. Very unique as all others seem to be Shimano.

I like the shimano type brakes eversince- the ease of removing the wheels was the main thing and dual pivot brakes seems to be better. Although the newer campy brakes are dual pivot now. I like the fact that the shimano engineers make notches with spring loaded tension for the brake cable adjusters and even with their shifter cable adjusters whereas campy only has a spring loaded tension cable stops/adjusters. This prevents chance of lengthening or shortening after adjustments are made. The newer 7800 DA brakeset comes with a newer brakepad compound and according to shimano, it performs better in dry and wet conditions. I have to try and see to believe it and if it does not meet my expectation, it sure will be auctioned at ebay and get a set of new campy record brakes. No doubt, campy brakes are one of the best out there in terms of performance.

I just bought my first road race bicycle, after always cycling around on hybrid bike. Going to pick it up next week and can't wait to ride it. I just hope I will have no problems adjusting to a enw riding style, but I think not.

my new bike, a giant ocr zero:

Tonight I ordered a Gunnar Sport. Its a TIG welded 853 frame. I've looked at and ridden a ton of bikes this last month. I've also spent way too much time surfing bike sites. Anyway, its my first bike purchase since I bought a Univega Viva Sport in 1980. Waterford is still making a stock of the 58cm size frames, so I have a few weeks to think of a color, but I'm leaning to either a yellow or green.

Some of the components:
Shimano 105 gruppo
Crank - 30x42x52
Cassette - 9 speed 12x25
TTT Forma 44cm handlebar

I haven't decided on my pedals or saddle.

I'll post pictures of the real thing as soon as I get it in a few weeks. I feel like a proud Daddy!
