31 miles this morning. Typical November, the weather was perfect today, 37 when I started and 49 when I quit. I'm wishing that I could at least do 200 miles this month.

Southern NV was a dream this weekend. I just wish we could grow some vegetation out here on the trails. Sloan Canyon has one of the largest collections of Petroglyphs in America. I didn't get to any, wimped out. Hopefully next time.

But it is time to remind everyone to get the working Christmas lights that you put in the attic last winter. Plug them in to find they are now not working. Rush off to your local store to buy some working lights.

Yup. Regular Sunday Wolverine club ride through downtown Detroit from Grosse Pointe, past Ford Field where the tailgaters were gathering for the Battle of the Cellar Dwellers (Lions vs. Browns), with a feed stop at a bakery near Wayne State U. 40 mile total, 15mph average. Damp and a bit chilly with some morning fog but still a good ride. Trying to see how long I can extend the season - or to put it another way, how cold it has to be before I resign myself completely to the Tour de Basement. Going to need a balaclava soon.

Sweet 20 miles today. November and 55 in WI - I'll take it! I'm now 80 miles short of 3,000 for the year. Hope to get some riding in over the Thanksgiving break, but weather's not looking so good. I'll ride in the cold, but not snow.

Another Functional Ride

Today started pleasantly, sunny and mid 50’s as Ollie and I took our first walk of the day. An hour later I left for my ride and shopping at Wally World. The expected overcast was now dark and foreboding. Plans changed immediately and I headed for Wally World in hopes of getting home before the rain arrived.

While shopping a shower had in fact arrived and ended just as I finished packing the bike. Then, just as I had started the ride home, the rain returned. Total distance of 5.71 miles in 32 minutes reflecting the extra care taken with the rain! The load today was a modest 25 lbs

it was a nice ride this morning. 47 deg. cloudy/overcast. threatened mist but not much of it. my little 10+ mile commute goes by quick. though today I almost slipped on a corner due to damp pine straw. whoops. I did catch myself as the wheels started to go out from under me. That was a close one. need to watch it on my route. watch it out there on the wet stuff.

Saturday was cold and wet and nasty. Did 1.5 hours and called it a day. Sunday did 1:15 run in the AM and then 1 hour on trainer in PM. We had such a good summer here its hard to adjust to months of rain and cold coming up.

Rode 16 miles on the mountain bike this morning at Pemberton Trail. Windy and chilly when we started, but didn't take long to warm up. Great day, and a great ride!!

I rode about 20 miles last night with the crew from Mike's Bike (Pico Blvd. in mid-town Los Angeles). I love this ride - when I'm on it, I feel like I'm 25!

We pedaled from the shop to Marina del Rey and back. Having made this ride a few times, I was gratified to finally see someone about my age on the ride - Martin, another L.A. native. Like me, he was gray bearded, on a single-geared bike. Everyone else looked like they were a few years out of high school, except for Mike, who's probably about 40, and for one nice kid - with lip rings, mohawk haircut - who is in high school.

Tonight, I was the only guy dressed completely in lycra, with Mike in his usual jeans and a retro long-sleeve bike jersey (like those he sells in his shop). Most of the guys wore caps, not helmets, and jeans or cargo shorts, and hoodies; we were all lit with plenty of candlepower - headlights and tail lights.

Starting from the shop at 6:45 p.m., we cut through a residential neighborhood of small, neat homes on tree-lined streets to broad, bike-laned Venice Blvd.. From there we headed west, ten of us (one a woman), on geared bikes and single speeds and fixies (which is what I rode). Traffic on Venice was as usual heavy; by turns it moved quickly and at a crawl. Sometimes cars zoomed past us, and other times we blasted past the cars.

Although I've got a set of brakes, I practiced slowing as I approached stoplights by resisting the inertia of the pedals and by skidding - I use the latter technique sparingly, because I don't want my expensive back tire to wear through to soon. That I can slow myself without brakes at my age I find uplifting.

A few miles down Venice we headed south, past the massive sound stages at the still-active Culver Studios, where much of Gone with the Wind was filmed in 1939, as was Citizen Kane a year later. West again, we hit the entrance to the Ballona Creek bike path. It's a mostly straight shot from there - 4.5 miles - to the marina and the bridge over the creek, which would be our stopping point. The bridge spans the creek where it enters a breakwater that forms the main channel of the Marina's entrance to the Pacific Ocean.

I enjoy riding the bike path, and I enjoy it perhaps most at night. The dark water in Ballona Creek reflect slightly brighter sky, and at times the of the lights of homes on the south bank are in reflection, too. Without the distant views of buildings and mountains, there is only the bike path before me, and the dark, often meandering waters of the creek to my left, to serve as my guides to the sea. At night, too, the reality that Ballona Creek is a concrete-lined watercourse fades away.

There are a number of underpasses along the route; the path dives under Overland Ave., Sepulveda, Sawtelle and Lincoln Blvds. It's dark on the path, and more so beneath the underpasses; for a few moments, the buttresses hide the water. At my age I definitely like having a strong bike light to show me the way.

Along the route we passed a small area on the right of what was once an extensive open space, including wetlands; now most of that open space is covered with condos and commercial buildings. Here the air grew chilly - probably the low 50s. Here I could both see and feel a thin ground fog. A rabbit darted in front of me, crossing the path to run down the sloped side of the concrete enclosure of the creek.

Once at the bridge, we spent some time enjoying our own company, and enjoying the night, with the sea and Marina del Rey - its channel and the residential buildings that line it - lit softly by less than half a moon; the moonlight was still bright enough on the dark bridge to cast shadows of we ten cyclists. Far to the east, the city lights twinkled at us.

The run back to Mike's shop was just as much fun to pedal as it was on the first half of the ride. I think, though, I need one more accessory - a headlamp. Egrets and herons and a variety of bird life inhabit the creek, especially near the entrance to the ocean. If I had a headlamp, I could look over the edge of the bike path and see the birds I know are always there in the quiet darkness, patiently waiting my return.

41 miles, mostly on rural roads, 40 miles south of Chicago. Foggy with temps in the high 40s in the AM.
They're finally getting the corn in. Harvest is about 3 weeks late due to wet fields. Deer and geese are all over.

35 miles last night with three buddies. Dark, no wind, high 40's with little to no traffic on rural Medina County roads made for a nice ride. We all agreed the ride would be relaxed, but as usual ended up being a hammer-fest. Average speed was 20.6 mph. Sam Adams "Winterfest" draughts and a Ruben sandwich topped off the evening with some good friends, which I am thankful to have.

Out at 6;30 this AM, 44 degrees, chilly for us desert types. 12.5 of nice moderate dirt. The bunnies were out there this morning. Just when I was patting myself on the back for being way out there in the morning, 3 young ladies came jogging up a hill I reserve for weekends only. I passed them on a double track getting out when one of them commented, its an uphill or you would never get past us. AHHHHHHH! She was probably right.
