Maybe this thread could actually be useful if we discuss surreptitiously contentious things people shouldn't do to newbies.
I'll start:
Unsolicited commentary and "advice" about personal matters like weight, number of kids, employment, etc. Example: newbie asking best method for transporting 3 toddlers on a bike is not asking for your opinion on how many kids they have, and telling people they have too many is definitely an unpleasant personal attack. Likewise, telling someone they're too fat when their question has not mentioned wanting weight advice. These are both versions of real thread events I've read. The details have been disguised to protect the innocent.

Others may find this hard to believe .... but I post on a number of forums and in most of those Everyone gets treated with some respect ... and in some, everybody is friendly all the time (obviously i don't post there much.) In a couple forums there are regulars who will get silly but everyone has seen it before and it never takes over a thread.
On some fora, regulars will actually shut down stupid arguments (Nikon vs Canon vs Sony? The Right way to .... the Right gear for ... )
I am sure there are worse places than BF, but BF .... it is unique, bless its heart.
Just letting you know.

Maybe because riding a bicycle is so accessible on some level. Even kids do it. Combine that with "you don't know what you don't know" and folks can be overnight cycling experts. And then get butt-hurt when corrected....

The topics of helmet, chain lube, and DF seats, should all be put in the "sticky" area to keep from mucking up the regular forum.

It's not just being hard on the newbies...It's experienced riders making their own rules and giving unsolicited advice to other experienced riders when those other riders may have completely different riding preferences and reasons for riding and generally different approach to cycling. It becomes even worse when certain posters start acting like doctors, psychologists, nutritionists, self-improvement gurus, police officers, sex therapists, behaviour therapists, fertility experts, rocket scientists and pro TDF riders.
