Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Portland Design Works Danger Zone Tail Light
With two rechargeable AAA batteries I can get over 12 hours of run time on the random blinking mode.

I have a whole gang of tail lights; used to really love the Knog stuff, but have had almost all fail in some way, including three Road Rs, so I can no longer recommend them.

I like both my Lezyne Zecto and KTV rear units, but my current fave is the Specialized Stix Comp.

Stix is insanely sleek and light, and I love the industrial look of the design, with it's visible emitters. The mount and recharge system is super simple and innovative.

It's only 20 lumens, but for a little extra pop when passing through shadows, I think it delivers. Some will understandably think 20 lumens is insufficient, but I'm not particularly concerned with daytime visibility, though probably something is better than nothing. In terms of appearance, ease of use, and bulk, Stix is virtually no penalty to use, so it's what I use now, front and rear for daytime.

Mine does, but many currently on ebay don't, so be careful what you order.

Even if you get a single mode, you could still get a 5 mode "drop in" (with flash) on dx.com or fastech.com. Or you can mod the driver.

I have the axiom pulse 60 and the cygolite hotshot. Both are great.

I also have the new nightrider solas(?) That has been good so far.

There's nothing wrong with PDW stuff with rechargeable AAA either.

My life is worth spending more than $50 for a light. I had the Cygolite HotShot but when I saw the Bontrager Flare R there was no comparison. Last 7+ hours for me before it hit the "low power" mode

I had a look at the Bontranger Flare R before buying my Cygolite Hotshot

not much difference between the 2 (Cygolite hotshot is 80 Lumens with 6 modes, and you can set the light intensity , and the Bontranger Flare R is 65 Lumens and has 4 modes but I dont think that you can set the intensity) ....

I get much more than 7 hours on my hotshot when I have it on a steady pulse on a fairly high light intesity

I've got a new Solas 30 and an old HotShot.

I think the HotShot is much brighter, but has such a concentrated beam that the Solas seems more visible at off angles.

They both lose out to the Axiom Pulse 60. Hands down. The one thing the HotShot has going for it is the crazy long battery life. I only have to recharge is every month or so. The others are once a week.

I really prefer the rubber band mounts rather than the rigid mounts like the HotShot. They are easier to switch among bikes.

I wonder if that's true with the new hotshot Pro 80, that advertises an "extra wide beam . . . ".

The Hotshot I bought 6 months ago is 50 lumens and you don't adjust intensity you adjust the frequency of the flashing which means faster flash rate lower battery life. I've also compared the light beam spread, much much better on the Bontrager. That's something you can't tell about any light in the store. I tested both at night in a pitch black garage and the Hotshot is bright and has an acceptable beam pattern but not close to the Bontrager. Either way both are great lights and like I originally said my life is worth spending some money on a taillight. I don't get people spending $25 on a cheap low powered light, asking for trouble in my opinion. Safe riding my Brit friend!

Switch the hotshot into the steady on mode, then press the adjustment button. It will change the brightness, or intensity, either up or down. Release and press again to adjust again in the opposite direction.

That makes a huge difference.

Rechargeable (18500 cell is in 3rd slot):

What's that rig you are using to attach it the bars?
