Well, 2020 has come to an end for me for riding. Was 48 degrees today with some wind so off on the Nishiki Maxima I went for 20 or so miles. It was a fun ride until 2 minutes from home. As I was coming down a slight downhill 2 minutes from home in our neighborhood, one neighbor's dog decided to take chase. He had been a problem earlier in the year but they had gotten their electric fence fixed. Well, pavement work in November on the corner I was quickly approaching took out part of that fence and the neighbor hasn't fixed it. Out on the road comes the black lab. I yelled his name a couple of times to try and slow him down but it didn't work. As he got to within 6 inches or so of my leg and growling loudly I reached down with my right hand for the water bottle and hit him square between the eyes. Then all hell broke loose ....
He either hit the back of my bike or the front drifted off the side of the road (the dog had been pushing me over to the right). The handlebars pivoted violently and, at 20 mph or so, I slammed into the pavement. The left hip hit first and the then the head impacted hard into the asphalt. The bike spun and we pitched into a 5 foot deep ditch with a foot of water or so in it. Not sure if I lost any consciousness but as soon as I realized the bike and I were sitting in water I grabbed the top tube with my left hand and, with blood pouring off my face, scrambled up the bank. I knew it was not a good situation when I got back tot he road and texted my wife to call 911 for an ambulance. My left hip really hurt and both hands were numb. With prior C5-C6 cervical fusion that really bothered me. 7 hours later the numbness has finally gotten better.
In the end, I got my first ever ride in an ambulance. Those guys did a great job warming me up. Lying on cold asphalt and partially wet I was shaking pretty fierce. I was still able to crack some jokes in the hospital with the staff. I have 3 stitches above the left eye, mild concussion, a fractured pelvis and am really, really sore. I've never been through 15 rounds with Mike Tyson but I'm pretty sure it probably feels about as bad as I feel now. Non-weight bearing for awhile so I'll just have to get ready for 2021.

Man I hate to hear this. Having also hit the pavement at 20+ mph and shattering the helmet, I still feel your pain 15 yrs later.

And relative to the dog...based on my experience managing corporate claims, once someone has been ‘given notice’ regarding a danger like a biting dog, they have negligent responsibility.
Or, whatever robbietunes would call it.

I work in insurance claims so I know the drill. These neighbors are very nice. Yeah, I could have them open liability claim on their homeowner insurance but most likely won't. It's just not me.

First ride since the big snowstorm last week. Roads were okay, but I would have liked more bike lane exposed. Temps near 40, so threat of black ice was abated.

Windy in Chicago too. Rode the ItalVega down the Lakefront Trail as far south as McCormick Place. About 20mph wind straight out of the south. Needless to say, the trip home was a bit easier. Might be the last real ride for a week or two.

Couple of childhood buddies wanted to do some trail riding. I showed up on my Highball and they were riding a Bontrager and an MB1. So I was the odd man out, lol. We rode these hills as kids and I feel lucky to still get out there.

Went out yesterday on a neighborhood shakedown ride on my 1984 Tommasini. Swapped the rims to clinchers and made it fit after the P.O. had set it in the shed for 20 years.
At five miles I rode past a stationary bike on the curb. "WORKS GOOD" "FREE!".
I didn't get excited, and wound my way back home another 5, then jumped in my truck
It was still there. I started loading it and a guy across the street asked if I needed help. He had a great dog. Even had the owner's manual and power block on the seat.
Got it home, and it seems to work great.
I'm taking it as a sign that the Fates want me to work out at home when I'm too lazy to ride or hike.

Doesn't rub going over bumps thankfully, but it does rub a little bit on out of the saddle efforts. A few strokes with a file should fix that.
It was built by someone out in CA in the 70s. Apparently the second frame he built. It's quite well done. Nothing really exceptional, but a solid, straight, simple track bike

It's sad to not be with family right now, but I made the best of the morning and went out on the very, very quiet streets. Cloud cover kept the city from cooling down much last night, and it was 50° before sunrise. Perfect for a ride. I rode up the Greenbelt, through Scottsdale.
45 minutes in, the sunrise was just an angry red rim on the horizon.
I just passed a thousand miles last week on the "Hot Wheels" bike I finished building at the end of August. It's sitting at 1,132 now, and I've enjoyed every one of them.
