Appears the judging was very challenging.
I would not want to do it.

Here's the jumbled bunch of photos I took. I still need to make sure everything is public and add more titles and descriptions.

Me neither. I hardly gave it a second glance. Paramount tandems. Ho hum...

I think they must have made this category up at the last moment , but it's proof that even an ordinary rider, not just a wall-hanger, can win a little something at these shows.
(You'll notice, no pictures of this bike appear in anyone's roll)

The bike doesn't have to be pristine, though those certainly were pretty to look at.
My Bruce Gordon Chinook had the "honor" of being placed next to the '77 Confente, so no one even saw it

So incentive for all you fence-sitters, come participate.

I’d agree, but this was was raced in the Olympics, the owner had the original drawings for the frame design, etc. etc. It was unique and beautiful. I’m not saying most people might have chosen something else as the overall winner, but this was a special bike.

A Confente frame was indeed used by Boyer in the Red Zinger Classic. Pic below is scanned from Red Zinger Bicycle Classic booklet. Kind of crappy scan but I did not want to mangle the publication. I believe you can still make out the Confente markings on the seat tube They are more visible in the booklet. It cannot be said for certain that these frames are one and the same.

UPDATE: Looking at cb400bill 's photos of the bike, I think it can be said the frame in the pics I shared is the same frame.

Photo below is a crop from a larger photo from Denver Post

On the "LeJeune" Confentes, yes.
Jim went back East to attend to a medical situation. Good timing.
J Grant from Apollo Engraving picked up the paint duties for a while, even after Mario went North.
Then there was a different painter or two in Northern Cal.

Recall fruben? he received his Confente in LA after the lockout. The detail paint was still drying. Was told to be careful.
Painted in Burbank/Glendale.

Like Pebble, "it's the story that goes with"

I would have had a Tandem category.

Note also, that Richard Schwinn was the initial headline speaker.

Was it one of Jeff Groman's very early one's?

merziac , No I think it was a 64.
Thought it was in background of a Paramount pict, but no. If someone wanted to buy a Paramount there were about 20-25 for sale 10 or 12 of them chrome.

Tx Galon, either way Paramount tandem's hold down a very storied and winning legacy, especially in the early days, thoroughly dominating and pioneering as well.

Lucky for us that Schwinn was so proficient that we have lots of them to keep us going and so many fans, experts, aficionados, and us mean they will be around for us to obsess over for a long time.

The prices currently are IMO very, very optimistic if not delusional for the most part, especially a couple of the hometown wingnuts.

I have a chrome one, a bit small and a bit dingy chrome so I should have dug in and gotten a nice one before I retired.

3 Paramount's and a Wastyn on the board, not bad.

Good thing Richard was there.

Plenty of tandem history, early on and later on, Schwinn didn't build any for a long time between the 30-40's? and the 60's?, then made up for lost time in the 70's.

Can't swing a cat nowadays.....

One of the judges is very Frejus biased. He could have sold that exact bike back in the day so he knew all the bits that should be there.

108 Wizards.

more Confentes.
now, there are some technical decisions to make- the first two as transferred while built at Masi. The "Ferrari" bikes for Fred and Irene.
then the "time study Pista frame", asymmetrical in finish details, no spade Cutouts, made in LA and from my review there was a Confente branded bike that probably shares the same geometry and size. That time study frame is painted as a Confente now, was not in Mario's lifetime.
the LA bikes and the Northern California bikes had two distinct numbering systems, total those two totals together gets 136.
Jim Cunningham had the LA build cards, unclear if he got his hands on the NorCal bike cards. He stated he would send the card to any verified owner, that changed to he would sell a copy to the owner. Profit margin is king.

Pista bikes were part of the same consecutive numbering systems.

Great pictures! I love that place. The building is as fabulous as the cars. I really regret not participating in the show but works been busy and it’s hard to get summer time off. I wonder if I could talk them into a “winter installation” as a way to store my bikes over the holidays?
