another AM ride means: 100cal whey shake followed by black coffee (Peet's Uzuri Blend).
on the bike will be 300 cal drink (malto/whey/bcaa) banana. 3 gels if needed. 2500+ kj ride planned.
post WO: potato, whey, curds, raisins, oats. Skim milk maybe. Typical recovery foods.

I ditched work yesterday and rode 103 miles at LSD pace with 2 others. I ate cereal before and on the ride I ate: 1 banana, 1 granola bar, 1 giant oatmeal raisin cookie, 1 small turkey sub sandwich, 1 small bag baked Lays, 1/3 of a huge order of fries.
I drank 1 bottle mixed Gatorade powder, 1 iced tea, 1 Pepsi, 9 large water bottles, (it was 85 degrees).
When I got home I ate some more.

it's only 10g whey. I dont suppose it helps performance, but if it speeds up recovery even 10%....
also it ads flavor and keeps me less hungry on the bike. this is good.

I normally put a little protein in my drinks mid-ride [since at some point your body will begin the metabolize it]. however, the question is - at what point might protein be needed [1 hour? 3 hours? 5?] and how much.
Has anyone read articles from Allen Lim on this? not sure he has talked about it explicitly, but they were giving the Garmin guys [supposedly] protein shakes after grand tour stages. again, this goes a bit counter to other arguments I have read.
on an eating status note, someone at work brings bagels every Wednesday. I think the person forgot today. not sure whether this will be good or bad.

Protein and iron are necessary to keep from losing hemoglobin which naturally goes down over the course of the Tour. That's my first guess anyway.

I have read a recent study (can't remember by whom) where they decided a small amount of protein can help the body metabolize carbs.
Here in California there is a group of maybe 10 riders who treat double centuries as races. My friend has come in first in several of these and top 5 in others and he always takes tuna sandwiches with him.

vegetables, a couple mini potatos, some chicken tenders (bad, I know) and a big bowl of yogurt/granola.
About 1000 calories. Good lunch. Time for a couple hours on the bike, and then dinner.

Broccoli casserole tonight. My wife just grins when I ask her how much butter is in it. No wonder I'm pudgy.
