1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

Last few years I've been riding "Dolans" out of Liverpool England. Terry is an old racing mate of mine.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

I consider my Dr of Naturalpathic always on the cutting edge of whats the best. He has designed his own supplements that we take daily as a family in the form of a shake.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Although I have never stopped riding my bike since I began 43 yrs ago. At 60 now my riding and activity is slowing down the progress, I find it rather humorous when compared to the young bucks.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Always biked but at 17 I started racing

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Having been a trackie . Most of my enjoyment comes from the road bike. I love doing long rides in Italy.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

This year was 9000 kms , plus some workout on our new Velodrome in Milton.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? (53 years old)

I ride road bikes. I used to moutain bike, but I'm just riding the road these days. My primary bike is a customized Argon18 Krypton built by me.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Fish oil, Vitamin D, a multi vitamin.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I've slowed a bit the past year, but that is in part due to an unplanned job change that does not allow me to commute and get the mileage I used to. 2014 was a peak year.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

10 years

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Rides into the mountains and surrounding country with distances from 25 to 125 miles.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

4-5 times/week, 6000 – 8000 miles /year.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I’ll be 64 in a couple of months. I primarily ride road bikes, though I do have a mountain bike I occasionally use. Except for projects, the bikes I own are listed on the left.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Not really. I get my fish oil by eating a can of sardines 4-5 times a week (in my lunch salad). I’ll probably start taking a Vitamin D supplement.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I’ve never been a fast rider, but I think my average speed is about 4 mph slower than it was 30 years ago. I’ve got to work on that.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

All my life.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Commutes, weekend rides of distances from 20 to 50 miles, occasional loaded tours. I’m taking up randonneuring, so am planning to do more organized rides this year. I’m already signed up for LEL 2017, and am tentatively planning to do Route 66 in 2018 (when I’m 66).

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Four to five times a week spring through autumn, not as much in the winter. I typically commute 40-50 miles a week and try to get in 30-50 more on weekends. I’d guess I did about 2,500 miles last season.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

07 Trek 1000SL 60cm/ Giant Escape Hybrid XL

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Fish oil gel tablets, vitamin B, multi and Whey protein shake after running, lifting or riding.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

slower running pace, but I think that is just because I don't do as much speed work anymore. Still can keep up with the younger folks at work on the bike.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

All my life.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Commutes, weekend rides of distances from 20 to 50 miles.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Four to five times a week spring through autumn, not as much in the winter. Spin classes in the winter when snowed in. Just started actually keeping a cycling log this year. I have logs on every run I ever done. Don't know why just never kept cycling log..

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I'm 50.
I have a Volagi Viaje that gets most of my miles. It's a disc brake, big tire road bike that's geared to longer distances and light touring. This is my commuter and general purpose bike.
I also have an older Gary Fisher hybrid that I mostly use for foul weather. Treadier tires and fenders.
I also have a Cannondale Slice tri bike.
I'd like to add a mountain bike to this stable. Maybe sell the Fisher. Thinking a 29er with full suspension, which would go off road and still be good for foul weather.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Niaicin and fish oil to boost HDL. L-methylfolate because I do a poor job methylating folate myself and my brain doesn't work well without it.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Meh. I used to be 300 lbs. My overall fitness and performance trend is positive in the last decade. Got slowed down on running with a back injury, but still improving my cycling and swimming.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Biked some as a kid, but started getting more and more hooked on it for about the last 7ish years.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Commuting is most of my miles. Triathlon/aquabike. Training/fitness/buddy rides. Family/leisure riding. Some group rides. Bit of mountain biking, would like to do more. Bit of camping/touring; wold like to do more. Winter indoor trainer intervals with cheap disco lights from Amazon and praise music accompaniment (no, I'm not joking).

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Spring through early Winter, I commute to work 26 miles a day unless the weather is really atrocious. I will do rain and I will do cold, but not cold rain or anything frozen. Other than that any day I can.
I know I commuted about 1550 last year but didn't keep track of training rides, total tri rides, family rides, etc.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I'm 53.
I ride a road bike , have Felt F4 (2011 model) and it is more than a good enough for me for 45-100 miles rides.
Also I have old mountain bike Orax 1100 for city commute.(it has city slickers tire)

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Taking multivitamins, Vitamin D, Vitamin B6 and ginger in morning smoothie,

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I'm much slower than in my 20's and 30's
.I didn't notice big slowdown in early 40's but in late forties and now I'm riding in much slower pace.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I ride road bicycle since my early 20's. I tried mountain bike but didn't like it (now I use it to commute).

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

During the week I make a short ride 10-20 km (6-12 miles) and my weekend rides are 60 to 120 km (40- 75 miles) sometimes longer but not more than 100 miles.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

I try to keep it 2-4 times / week and from mid April to end of September it ends up about 4500 miles(+/-)

Hell, why not?

Please tell us your age. - Just turned 50 in December 2016.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older? - Omega-3 and vitamin D.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any? - I'm healthier now than when i was 20 or 30, though I take longer to heal and recover.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life? - Been cycling for about 4 years.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. - I commute 3-4 days a week, anywhere from 10 miles to 15 (if I stretch it) each way. I like to do at least 30 miles each weekend.

Now that I have a few miles under my belt....

Please tell us your age.

59. And a half.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I ride a Kona Big Rove (aluminum). It's a nice commute/errand/short-distance type of bike. Big fat tires, great for commuting on crappy potholed streets. It's possible that it's also a good long-distance bike, but I haven't tested that yet.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Multi-vitamins on occasion. Glucosamine, but I don't know if it actually does any good.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I was off the bike for 35 years until about three months ago. So if anything, I've sped up.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Effectively new.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Mostly commuting, some short rec rides on the weekend, have started to do slightly longer rides (~30 miles or so -- I'm sure that's short for many folks here.)

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

I bike 4-6 days a week. I'll be happy to tell you my annual mileage when I've been riding an entire year.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I have only started riding road "seriously" for the last three years. I haven't had time to slow down.
I'm slow in spring (I don't train in winter) and get progressively faster until I have to quit in early october.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Been riding since 1981. Mostly to get to work, school, to get around locally, etc.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

20 milers to 60 milers on the road bikes. Usually 20 or less on the M80, but under load.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Every day in the summer. Not at all in the winter. about 100 miles per week for 25 weeks, so 2,500.
I'd like to move to N.C. to get a longer cycling (and gardening) season in.

I joined this forum in 2008 but I don't think I've ever answered the introductory questions. Here I go...

Please tell us your age.
I'm 61

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I just bought a Trek Crossrip Elite... I have a 2008 Trek 7500 and a 1986 Schwinn Tempo

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Currently on blood pressure medications and a cholesterol medication. I'm hoping that riding again will help eliminate some of these

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Yes. I never was fast... I just enjoyed riding

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I've biked all my life. Starting with a Schwinn Sting Ray in about 1965. First "ten-speed" in 1970.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
I rode a lot in high school and my bike was my transportation in college. Let it lapse for a few years and started up again after my kids were born. Then became a recreational rider. I had prostate surgery just over 3 years ago and was unable to ride. I just bought myself a Crossrip and have begun commuting again. Rides are getting longer.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I took the #30daysofbiking challenge and have rode 25 of 25 days so far. A GREAT way to get back into riding again!

I'm 61

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride? (52 years old)

I have a 2015 Ridley Fenix CF that I just bought (great bike), a 2011 Scattante R570 that I am going to keep, upgrade the triple to a compact double for a travel/winter bike and a Electra Lux D that I cruise around on.
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Fish oil, Vitamin D, a multi vitamin.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I've slowed a bit but mainly I don't recover as well

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I started Cycling in 1991 and have cycled off and on over the years with life happening in between.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Rides into the surrounding area with distances from 15 to 75 miles. I am starting to get into some group rides which are fun.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

4-5 times/week, 60-100 mile per week currently mainly due to weather probably increasing to 200 miles plus per WK this summer.

I'm 77. Will be 78 in Aug. I ride when I can.
How much longer, I don't know. None of my bike info is worth noting.
With sleep apnea, how much I ride depends on the amt of sleep I get. (I use a bipap machine and also an oral device.)
I ride on the greenway along the river because of the scenic beauty and my love of nature. Our city is in the process of upgrading the greenways and we have some beautiful ones already. I am thankful that my health is as good as it is in spite of my physical quirks. (such as 3 prostate operations). I've ridden for 69 years on and off and on a good week I might get in 60 miles. If I really feel good, I get down to the New River Greenway between Galax and Blacksburg, Va. and ride from Galax to the New River close to Fries, Va. and then back for a distance of about 15 or so miles. (it used to be a railroad route, so it is very level) That's one of the most scenic rides anywhere in the East and it is close to where I grew up.

Salsa added to the family

Last weekend I gave my Trek 7500 to my grandson. There was an empty space in the garage that now had to be filled... So today I bought a Salsa Marrakesh. Does a 61-year old need a Touring bike? Have I wanted one for the last 30 years? I'll never get that Corvette that I've always told my wife about, and the Marrakesh is amazing. So I'll start with some short tours and then.....

Hi. I’m a 60 year old female rider in the Bay Area, California.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Several years ago I had a custom Seven road bike built for me. I love this bike! It’s titanium, has mountain gearing with Campy shifters, and a lovely set of custom wheels. The wheels make for a very nice ride.

I also have a “flat foot” or comfort type of bike that I use to ride to the gym, or tool around the local MUP trails. I wanted one of those bikes I see people ride up to an intersection and stop without having to hop off the seat. I wanted something easy to ride after knee surgery, and I've kept it. It’s a Townie. It’s my “around Townie."

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
I take vitamin D, and Naproxen to keep inflammation down. I’ve inherited my mother’s arthritis.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I haven’t slowed down on the bike really although I don’t take as many chances. I’m much less tolerant of riding around cars. I need more rest time in between rides.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
All my life. I have an early memory of really enjoying rides in the stroller, no lie. I liked the feel of the rubber tires as they rolled on the sidewalk. No surprise that I like cycling. :-)

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
I like the fitness that comes with hill climbing, and I have a favorite 30 mile / 2000 foot ride that I do once a week. Mid-week I try to get to the ranger’s station on my local mountain, Mount Diablo (for folks familiar with northern California.) I haven’t made it all the way there yet this year but I’ll keep trying.

My local area has an extensive MUP system, and the trails follow the many creeks in the area. There are nice views, I see some wildlife, and they’re generally quiet and peaceful. I see many gray-haired cyclists, most with the same giddy grin that matches mine! It doesn’t amount to much mileage but it’s a lovely way to get out of the house and do something fun.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I ride a road bike, and at times I have a fat bike I hit the trails with.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Just a multi vitamin.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I ride as much as ever, but I'm a bit slower and need an extra day to recover after a long ride.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I rode in my 20's, then took 20 years off and picked it back up in my 40's.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

I guess that depends on your definition of long. I do 20 to 30 usually 3 days during the week, and one 50 plus over the weekend. When the weather is dicey, I'll do some weak attempts at sprints, or go ride the fat bike around in the woods.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Most weeks I do between 100 and 150 miles. But that can vary depending on weather and outside interferences. A good riding week for me would be four days on and three off and anything over 100 miles.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

'12 Cervelo R3 Team/Campy Chorus; '93 Marinoni Special/Campy Record bought new and custom made; Rocky Mountain hard tail/front suspension MTB of mid-90s vintage, a chain store cross bike with rack for city/utility riding.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

No. Just a well-balanced diet.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

At age 35 I could do solo 80-90 km rides at an average of 27-30 km/h, in the hills, without unclipping. Now I can do 27-30 on rides on the same distances if there aren't many hills and I'm riding with my wife and we take turns drafting, and with rest stops. Most of my rides though, are in the 25 km/h range unless I feel like pushing it. I too find it harder to do long rides on consecutive days, I like to have a rest day between long rides.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Since I was a kid. Stopped biking seriously for a time in the late 90s as we raised our family, but health concerns got me back into it in 2006.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Long rides, short rec rides. Average rides are in the 60-80 km range, with a few over 100 and generally one century per season. Also some short city rides. I

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

I average 3000-5000 km per season depending on weather, travel, etc. Currently retired so trying to log more miles. Long winters and short summers here, so in winter I hike and snowshoe in the local mountains to keep fit.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Have a Cannondale hybrid and a CAD- road bike

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
No, just a One a day multivitamin, you do need to have a balance diet on proteins and carbs as needed before and after a ride.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Actually it varies, may have slowed a bit, but definitely feel better and stronger, but no longer can keep up with young riders.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Most of my life, did lot of MTB for years, now mainly road biking.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Like long rides, if my legs allowed me would be riding all day.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

30-50 miles 2 or 3 times/week, training for a 100 mile ride and in 2 years will be on a cross country to celebrate my 70 bday.
I am 68.

Some questions:

Please tell us your age.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Ok I am going to be 55 next month. I ride a Wilier Grand Turismo like road biking not off the trails.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Not at all I just try to eat reasonable and I am active but still have to watch what I eat

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I have been riding much more serious the last 8 years and not really have slowed biking. Now my running that has really gotten slower hence the bike more.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I am runner first having done that now for 38 year always road a bike as such but never like I have in the past 8 years.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides
I like to go on longer rides of 35-80 miles. A century is fine but frankly I can complete those and so really for if I am doing a century I like to go for time, see if I can ride it faster.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Been going 3000-5200 miles the past 8 years running about 1200.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

Previously a Trek 720. Now I am loving my Bike Friday! Having a light weight 7 speed folding bike makes using public transit easier as well as encouraging me to ride further, knowing I can always get a ride back from a friend or a cab if need be. The bike fits in any trunk.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

A huge fan of Celedrin...I no longer take NSAIDS at all for my back disc problems or my crappy knees.
If I skip it for a few days, I definitely feel it. I'm a huge skeptic about supplements, but have proven this one for myself.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I'm more active now than when I was working; I didn't have time then to be physical nor the energy after a 55 hour week. While the quantity of activity is greater now, the quality is probably "slower" as I spin now instead of mash the pedals.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Hadn't biked since I was a kid. Got an e-bike when I first retired, just so I wouldn't feel stranded if I went somewhere. Sold it after about a year as I became more confident in my stamina and skill. Been riding consistently for the last 4 years now.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

I ride instead of drive unless I have a passenger. So, all shopping and errands, as well as daily exercise rides of 7-16 miles depending on my mood and the weather. Have not done an overnight trip but it is on the bucket list.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Between 60-100 miles per week...around 3500 miles a year at least.

GRTN up date

I have new road bike that I am up grading for road service. It is TREK 7.0 . It lighter than my SCHWINN Voyager 21. Same wheels size cc700 up right type. It climbs hills same speed but less stress. It quick shift and other parts design make the bike easier to ride and I seem to move faster and I get less tired. The seat is the bad part. I am going to change the seat to more comfortable seat.
I pull a heavy trailer full of food and supplies. I seem to have more power and shifting is quicker so I can keep up the speed.
My travel to work round trip is little less than 50 miles when I go. I mostly take my truck home with me now. I am keeping both bikes. I going to down grade the SCHWINN to shop bike at the shop for irons. The TREK was for that and I was noticing when I used it, I took less power and it seem to go smother. So now any future bikes I be looking at TREK. Currently my age is 66. I do notice when riding that I eat more and sleep better.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I don't pay much attention to what others ride, but I am still madly in love with my 1996 GT Outpost Mountain Bike, which I have modified for use as a commuting and touring bike.

For tires, I alternate between Specialized Nimbus 1.5" slicks and Schwalbe Big Apples that are, I think, 2.35" wide. I have a mirror and an mp3 player/speaker on my handlebars now, and I don't go anywhere without my Topeak trunk bag/pannier on the rear rack.

I have replaced just about all the parts over the years and have covered the frame in decals of places I have ridden or have ridden to. More than I love having bicycled so many miles over the past 21 years, I love having ridden the same bike (the very first bike I purchased when I rediscovered bicycling at age 34) for all these years.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
No

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I was never into speed, so I don't really know how to gauge whether I have gotten "slower." The motivation to ride is as strong as ever, but I find myself with less free time and more body aches that keep me from actually doing it! I still commute a few miles back and forth to work by bike - perhaps 3-4 days a week on average - during the fair weather season, and I still take at least two overnight rides (about 50 miles each way) every summer.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Growing up in the late 60's and early 70's, my friends and I rode our bikes everywhere. We'd get up in the morning and ride sometimes 10 miles to a mall and back without even telling our parents ahead of time. When we got home, all they'd usually ask is "Did you have lunch?" This went on from the time I was about 8 until I got my driver's license at 17.

When I got married a few years later, my wife and I bought some used Peugot road bikes that were the wrong sizes for us, so we quickly gave up riding. It wasn't until I left the music business in 1995 and needed a way to burn energy that I became infatuated with mountain biking. The rest is all much exaggerated history.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Commuting, rides to the beach, a couple/few overnight trips from Long Island to Connecticut or Rhode Island each year, easy rail trail rides with my wife, who is a bit older than I am and not a life-long cyclist, by any means.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

From around late April to late October, I commute the short 3 miles to work as many days a week as logistics allow. Unfortunately, these days, this accounts for most of my riding. I have no idea how many miles I ride per year, nor am I interested in knowing, quite frankly!
