bf member and large cat 3 crit racer mkadam68 has broken 5 hours in that ride. If you get under 5 you get to start at the front the next year, a great honor, I guess.

100 hard miles in Austin this weekend.. I haven't ridden in two weeks, but at least I'll be fresh.. been pretty busy with 72 hour work weeks.

I need to start hustling for a new damn job.

I did ride last year. A family member in Tuscon invited me to stay and ride it.

Last year it was <50F, raining and dark at the start. That was not fun.

Is it normal to require teams to wear matching helmet? Matching socks?

I'm required to purchase a matching Rudy Project Sterling, MSRP $250. Oh but we get a great 55% discount so it's "only" twice what my perfectly functioning helmet cost. Not sure the owner realizes 55% off a $250 helmet is not a good deal for lowly peasants. Then he posts the required $12 socks.

I just want to tell him us poor middle class kids buy socks at Target or WalMart, but the helmet almost makes $12 socks seem like a steal. I'm just waiting for the required $200 base layer. Talk about upper class being out of touch with reality.

Agreed. If you want to require me to wear something outside of a jersey I best be getting it for free or you can pound sand. My current team is super lax on that stuff sense at the end of the day it doesn't matter at all unless sponsorship agreements are in place, then again, make it free.

That's pretty pro to make a 4 have to wear all that junk. Team arm warmers and socks are a gross overkill of advertising and I just go with flat black on those.

What really annoys me about our team is we have done a total kit redesign the last 3 years. Personally it seems like a lot to ask for especially if you are going to race omniums or any stage races. Do most teams do this?

unless it's an elite team and guys are getting clothes for free, it's poorly managed teams that dramatically change kits every year. Ours have changed so modestly over the past several years it's very easy to get by wearing an older kit in a pinch.

seems a bit much if they aren't covering the full cost. i'd imagine if you didn't get the helmet, all would be well. my old team just required a kit purchase (no other fees). new team is similar, but they'd prefer matching helmet, shoes, and socks. team logo'ed socks are cheap at $6/pair and there are reasonable discounts for the helmet and shoes.

from what i've seen up here, most teams do some minor tweaks year to year, but remain noticeable. i think some can get away with using the kits from years past as a result. there are a few teams have done total overhauls each year as well though.

I am on my 5th total new kit in 5 years. I think this next one is going to stick, though - only one main sponsor, so no new-logos-every-year. thank god, I'm one of those matchy-matchy people who buy all the accessories, and the price really adds up.

I see nothing has changed on my old team... Martin owes me $40 in socks, tell him to give you mine!

I did it in 4:37 two years ago, so I get to start at the front. Its really my only motivation to do it.

My team has matching helmets every year. It's nice getting a new lid each season, they're included in dues so it's no added cost. This year is the giro synthe.

Socks are supposed to match but a lot of guys wear different socks for some reason.

$12 socks sounds completely reasonable, too. Sock guy or some other pedestrian brand? I'm actually serious though, I've never bought cycling socks for less than that, do they really have them???

Define "regular" because if you're wearing regular old cotton socks then I feel sorry for you.
