Keeping spare pump in truck cab//car trunk?

Done this for years. Pumps do seem to wear out every couple years or so. But they see a fair amount of use too. Plus they are cheap ones to begin with.

When I load my bike on the rack my routine along with checking for socks, shoes, helmet, hydration, sunglasses, charged lights is to also put the floor pump in the vehicle and top off the air pressure on every ride at the parking lot, trailhead, etc. I keep a small wedge saddle pack with 2 fresh Co2 cartridges and 2 tubes on every ride. I wrap the tubes down tight with saranwrap to shrink them as much as possible and to protect them from damage from the other stuff in the wedge.
