Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

But I have a 6 mile stretch of road with no stops and a 50 mph speed limit. It's where I ride A LOT.
Right lane, keep an eye on the mirror. The coast down, the steady state, the minimum distance, the two parts, are all important.

Friends had a long ride planned for the mountains tomorrow but canceled because it's supposed to be cold, windy, and maybe wet up at 8000 feet. My back hurts anyway so I don't know what I can do.

Impossible!

I drove highways to the boat today. Speed limit was 70-75 the entire way. Urban highways. Most do 10-15 over. 60 can get you hurt or worse.

Most of the time I don't drive more than 5 above the speed limit. It's 65 here in West Knox County.

Porsche guys are my favorites. The techs at the dealer refuse to ask for advice, so that leaves the service advisor to try and be the go-between. One youngster told me I was full of **** after I tried to explain readiness monitors to him, and if the tech would just run the short test, that would do the work for him. I let him know it's no skin off my back. My car has plates. He called back a few days later to apologize. I let him know he was in a bad spot, being between a prima donna that thinks he knows everything, and a prima donna that even knows how to get a Porsche through the program.

The drivers? You can spend time driving it, or you can spend money running the monitors with the scan tool. Neither option is satisfactory to them.

It's 65 in most of California, sometimes 70 in some rural areas. Many people drive 75-80 here in town. It's very dangerous.

The cicadas have designated our patio as a place to come and die, especially right outside the door. They sort-of stick to the ground and fall apart if you try to broom them away.

Not a lot of Porsches around here although there are some. One of my neighbors even has a Ferrari.. But, Pickups, Nissans, Toyota’s, Chevys, Fords, Subarus are all flying on the highways around here. It’s the crappy cars at 80 that you have to worry about.

If you're doing 5 over on I-17, you'd better stick to the slow lane.

Everyone doing 80 is better than everyone doing 80 except for the guy doing 60.

I'm not doing anything on I-17. I'm driving the speed limit (sometimes below) on a short stretch of I-75/40.

101 (The 101, for the SoCal types), 70 is normal except when it's stop and go. 280 (again, The 280 for Southlanders), everyone's going 75-80. Few go more than that. It's like the Unwritten Law.

I often feel more threatened in the car driving to a ride start than I do on the ride.

Try riding in suburban Knox County.
