Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The "Ebola wipes out a village" scenario happened a number of times, I believe. The thing about Ebola is that it's SO lethal that it tends to burn out quickly. Contrast that with, say, AIDS, which has killed orders of magnitude more people, because it takes a couple years after infection for the immunodeficiency to manifest, during which time the infected are apparently completely healthy.

We are heading to Charlottesville on Saturday for our vacation. I do hope to get some rides in, but the weather forecast looks pretty chilly for next week. Must bring layers.

Big trainer year for me already because of my new concentration on low-intensity workouts and the impossibility of getting them with the hills.

The last two rides, which I did on the Centurion Ironman that I got in 2021, have been distinctly unsatisfying. I'm not sure why, but it feels like I'm riding in molasses. I checked both F and R brakes, and they're not rubbing. I checked how easily they spin and while they're not the best hubs, they're not the worst either, and they have all new bearings and grease only last year. The gearing - 52/42 x 13-26 - isn't optimal, but it really should only impact me on hills. But even on the flat, it feels slow and sluggish and my average speeds reflect that. By contrast Sunday was really good! On a different bike, of course.

Anyhow, the Centurion has another chance this afternoon. We'll see.

Mrs. GJ and I have been cogitatin' on taking a trip Back East soon to visit potential retirement spots. So I mentioned trying to figure out how to get a bike back there. She made fun of me, not being able to go 2 weeks without a ride, and I said, "It keeps me sane!" which is true. But also, I'd like to explore the local riding, which may or may not be a good idea - getting lost in a new city, and with Mrs. GJ being even less of a navigator than I am! If I told her where I was, could she even find me? Maybe I should just go ahead and ship one of the bikes - I'm thinking the Bianchi - to my sister, at Mom and Dad's old place, where it could be safely stored, and I wouldn't have to travel with it?

Hmmmmm.......

Once you figure where you will be visiting, you may want to poke around for the LBS's in the area, a rental would be easiest.

I figure if we're looking at Lancaster and Pgh, M&D's place is right in the middle. Well, not REALLY the middle. Closer to Lancaster. AND it would be there anytime I visit. AND I'd have managed 10% of the bike move!

Both are viable, but there is a UGE hinterland between them.

The Alabama part, where I grew up.

Mrs. GJ is still stuck on Buffalo, still waving away concerns about the cold and the snow. The other evening, it was about 55 degrees out, and she declared it was "FREEZING!!!". She REALLY doesn't remember cold.

I think the trick is to get an e-bike that isn't obviously an e-bike. Of course, there's still the sound, but maybe one could cover that by not oiling the chain for a while....

As I understand it, 55 degrees in Buffalo is considered "shorts weather".

Hey Virginia people, if I ride from Charlottesville to the Southern part of Skyline Drive/Northern end of BRP, is it a better ride to turn right onto Skyline and head North, or turn left on the BRP and head south??
