This caught my eye this morning, a piece of reddish quartz on the trail. With a little moisture on it it looked like a slice of organ meat that got left behind.

Huh......Glad you didn't run over it, if you did you might have needed more than a tube patch in your cycling kit....glad you missed it.
Best, Ben

My sister said the same thing. Truth is I don't run anything over on purpose if I can possibly avoid it. I consider anything lying on the road a potential cause of either a flat or accident.

^^^^^ In all seriousness, "turn around don't drown" is not just a catch-phrase. I own land in a flood-prone area, and people have been killed doing just what's depicted above. The one above should have been a giveaway, given how close the waterline is to the street signs. The killer is when the water level appears close to what the road level should be, but the road is actually washed away.

or if the water is moving. It takes surprisingly little water to push a car off the road.

Yep, a cubic yard of water weighs nearly one ton. Imagine an angry creek or river pushing you sideways. People just don't get it.

(Heck of a hill leaving St. Albans on T). Little Tavern Hill is a relief compared to that.

On a more positive note, Heads Store is still standing.....

It was originally a simple general store serving the local farming community (and bike riders..). Surrounding the store with a country club didn't bring enough business to keep it going, unfortunately. There was an effort to refurbish it to serve an upscale clientele, but that doesn't appear to have succeeded.

Here's the store back in the late 80's when it was a proper general store...

While it is always a bit sad to see things change, the good news is that there is a ton of fun scenic hill roads to enjoy in this area, and I do my best to get out there and ride them all!

They built a new “quaint” inn right next to the store. Only a matter of time until the store is taxed away.

I think the store was open again last summer, so maybe there's hope that the store will stay in business. I really should pop inside and see what is going on.
Still, the whole overwhelming wealth of that area is hard to take. I'm glad that the development of West County was restricted.
I can't help but wonder how much the wealth of the area has been impacted by so many of the major corporations of the area being bought out by larger competitors. Although.. I have to admit that my former employer, McDonnell Douglas, seems to be surviving okay under Boeing management.

in other news of that area... I saw that Jellystone Park RV was changed and Yogi isn't out front anymore. This is a photo from a few years ago...

Probably not a major loss to local culture, but...

A tour guest when I was leading commercial bike tours said that once when he was riding along, he saw an empty beer can lying on its side on the fog line, perpendicular to his line of travel. On an impulse, he rode directly across the middle of it, and it made a satisfying crunch. A couple of miles further along, he came to another one, and did the same thing. This one clamped onto his wheel, rotated to the fork crown, and sent him onto his head. Fortunately, he wasn't badly hurt.

Having a rattlesnake clamped on to your wheel, I guess, would be as bad or worse.

Speaking of floodwater (see post #1309), it always amazes me to see people riding through big puddles at high speed, without thinking that it might be covering a sharp-edged three-foot-deep pothole. It's those non-obvious hazards that will get you

Are those pecan trees, or almond trees? I ask in sincere ignorance.

Almond trees. Lots of pistachios, oranges and grapes in the area, too. Sadly, the orchards are slowly falling to bulldozers as the suburbs push further out.

I've been stung on my forehead when a bee got stuck in my helmet, and have chased a few out after quick stops to take off my helmet. I was stung on my chest a couple of years ago when one went down my jersey. One of my buddies gave me a Benadryl for the 30 mile ride home, and since then I carry a couple Bendadryl in a contact lens case, along with a 325 mg aspirin (most of my group is over 65) and 2 ibuprofen.
