Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What about eBay? Well, I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure the Trek dealer agreement would prohibit the store from selling it on eBay themselves. Enter the store owner/manager's wife or SO, who can bypass that because he/she isn't the store per se.

He/she lists it, goofs up the model year, gets asked after the fact, and does what I did: look it up at Trek's dealer site. Oh look, it must be an '08, the computers said so.

In the big picture, I would just build it and ride. That's a great price for a pristine frameset and I see no tangible benefits to killing the goose that laid the golden eggs here.
It's pretty clear that the seller is a bike shop by the stuff they are selling:

https://shop.ebay.com/nixonvw/m.html

My guess is that it is this one:

+1 on it being a Trek shop, but why do you guess it's the shop you linked to?

The listings make it clear that it is a Trek store. Ebay listings that he ships from Plainfield Il, and that Trek store has a location in Naperville 6 miles away.

The plot thickens. Former Cubs great and hall of famer Ernie Banks lives in Plainfield. Could it be? Nah, can't be. Say it ain't so Ernie, say it ain't so.

“I thought about lacing up my Adidas Supernova Glide 2s, wrapping my flowing pony tail in a pink leopard band and sprinting down to my LBS to pick up the Project 1. The smile was spreading across my face as I mused of whipping my fake croco wallet out of my Hermes Birkin bag and throwing down for the bike of a lifetime. I could see it now, riding up Stillwater Canyon, just me and my Project 1, lactic acid and cadence be damned I was conquering that thing once and for all. Then it hit me like last night’s tequila boomboom, I’d have to face Buck, the bike shop owner I’d just girled in last week’s Century. I moved Cherchival off my lap, reached for my computer and fate took over as I typed in e-Bay"

Few things are worse than being "girled" on a climb. I've got a story, but not here, not now.

so where was I...

"Cherchival?" I asked. "What do you think? Should I attempt to find the bike of my dreams on e-Bay?" Maybe I should ask what to do on Bike Forums, I thought. I've always heard good things about those people. Well formed questions always get proper answers. Suddenly, at the end of that thought, a lightening bolt struck outside, hitting the transformer and the power shut off! Wow, that was close. I guess I'll have to wait for my answer on Bike Forums. Just then another lightening bolt struck, this one closer! "Cherchival, I don't think God wants me to ask anything on Bike Forums!" Cherchival just shivered in agreement.

Additional comment relative to the thread topic: I recently filed a dispute through AMEX over one of the online auction companies, which has (as I found out when talking with AMEX) a bad reputation. Specifically, you can't open an account to their site with paying a minimum, which they don't tell you until you open the account. It may be in the small print that's hidden behind the check box, but that's not what I intended. I just wanted to see what junk they were auctioning, as you can with E-Bay. The stuff I saw was crap, and decided to cancel my account post haste. Having wisely used my AMEX card, I called and filed a claim of fraud, that they weren't clear about having to pay $75 just to open an account to see their junk.

Here was the result.

Perhaps using one's AMEX card to make payments to PayPal for E-Bay purchases adds another level of buyer protection given how AMEX will go to bat for you. Mind you, I haven't had any bad experiences with E-Bay, and I've spent thousands on bike stuff over the years.

One thing I've noticed is if you leave negative for a seller. If you have an account and sell stuff normally. They will buy the cheapest thing you have leave you negative no matter what. Just to get back. It has happened more then once to us.

Yeah, but that cuts both ways, then they can do it back to you again. If a dbag buyer leaves negative feedback it's really a pain as a seller. My LBS who does a cool million $ on eBay annually is such a big Power Seller that he has a rep @ eBay he can call, and HE has a hard time getting unwarranted negatives removed. His policy is you don't like it, send it back, half the time he even pays shipping. These idiots just leave negative feedback before they even give him a chance to resolve the issue. eBay really should allow you to protest that more easily as a seller. If you're willing to do a full refund the negative feedback should be expungable.

Like that word. Expungable. I just made that up.
