Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It looks like we're gonna save the finger minus the tendon that allows it to flex above the second knuckle. They tell me I'll be released from the hospital on Wed. Thence begins 4-6 weekly dr. visits in covid land with an immune system compromised by antibiotics. Is there anything I can do for the immune system under that regime?

Yikes.

Too late for you now, but I have seen interesting discussion of a safety device for a table saw called "SawStop". Here they demonstrate with a hot dog:

The hot dog is barely nicked in the process as the blade retracted just as it touched the hot dog. It essentially destroys the blade if you get your finger in there, but that's better than a trip to the hospital.

Oof. Heal up.

Should I ever get a table saw, I think that I will certainly invest in one with skin sensing tech, be it a SawStop or a future competitor.

I suspect it has more to do with less outdoor play and sterile indoor environments in chlldhood than antibiotics, but none of this has anything to do with poor seedsbelize 's short term concerns!

Bosch also has a working method, one that doesn't destroy the blade and can be easily and cheaply reset by the user, but SawStop has a legal department that's about as aggressive as that of Specialized. Not sure if the Bosch units are available elsewhere in the world, but they're certainly not on the market in the US.

I'm not saying people at risk of serious infection shouldn't take antibiotics, but I have come to believe that antibiotics are given too often. And that there are a lot of unanswered questions about the interaction between digestive microorganisms and the immune system. In fact, mounting evidence that they are linked.

Ouch! Been there, done that, but apparently not so severe, didn't require hospitalization.

I would begin daily probiotics to replace the good bacteria destroyed by the antibiotics.

A technology that serves the common health that much seems like a textbook case of something that should be forcibly licensed at reasonable terms to all comers.

I'll see myself and my commie pinko interest in the health over profits out the door.

Very nice. Must be beautiful there, but you're right. Not much thought in that plan. I never had the feeling the locals had much love for out-of-staters once they put their wallets away and now they're more justified in being unfriendly.

I used to know the coast from Rockland to Mt Desert fairly well, loved it, and would love to go back. Wife and I were all set to help a friend deliver his boat from Annapolis to Portland over Memorial Day, but that's obviously off. We also have a standing invite to go up and do a classic boat regatta or two in July or August on my main Bermuda ride, but we probably won't make it.
