without significant changes to the 10cm rule (pads to tips) the 30° is nice, but doesn't change much, especially now that you can't push the pads far up towards the end of the extensions.

you can go 140mm now (if you are tall enough), 5cm width (up from 4cm) on the extensions also lets a decent bit more of a fairing effect. nothing mindblowing but it is going to make people faster

yeah, I mean every bit is nice, but even the tallest guys aren't going back to mantis, and they made it pretty impossible to do what Ganna / Archibald were doing before to "cheat" the rule, so if you wanted that setup, it's a net negative imo from 2022.

Could you explain to a aero bar newbie?

lol I realize now it's probably all of it.
So the thing I understand is that you want your hands up to your face, but your arms had to be almost level. So there must have been some workaround for Ganna etc to get their hands higher? I don't know how the new rules affect the "hands up to face" bit.

Before 2023 - 10cm mid pad to the tip of the furthest point of the extension (or shifter, and if a shifter is installed, they measure at the tallest/furthest *possible* position) With a maximum pad angle of 15° - In practice this restricts the mantis position because the middle of the pad very quickly reaches 10cm to the tip of the extension just do to how an upturned extension would pivot, and on 99% of commercial aerobars the pads are in a fixed mounting area. (generally above the base bar more or less)
So if you look at the original Carbon Wasp bars Archibald used, or the 3d Printed ones Ganna has been using, the pads actually mount much, much closer to the tip of the extension. This effectively let them significantly "raise the angle" of the extension to a more mantis' like position than what "should" have been possible, at the expense of you having your armrests closer to your wrists than your elbows. (There is a WC photo floating out there somewhere of Archibald where you can actually see he has padding in the sleeve of his skinsuit and is using the "flat" part of his custom aerobars behind where the actual pad is mounted as a support to game the system.)
Now, it's not as simple as "more mantis more faster" but, for guys that have tested and it is...it's obviously a big advantage vs. guys without access/willingness to go to those extremes.
2023 rules address this somewhat by having defined area's where the pad sits in relation to the extension, ie the gap has to stay wider, which enforces the distance from pad to extension tip "more fairly" (at least for now in theory)

thanks, that clarifies things.
