It turns out crashing can apply forces to frames that they aren’t designed for, especially when you are traveling really fast. Also, frames breaking in crashes is not new to CF…or any other frame material.

A dose of reality here. How many of you ride in a big, tight groups at the speed of professionals? Come on, really.
Not only will almost all forum posters not crash like that, they rarely see the full potential of a CF frame. Blowing up a frame of any material in the same manner as this rider is unlikely unlikely to happen to non-pro riders.
FWIW, I do not ride CF frames.

The only frame I have broken was steel.

All bets are off when you are involved in a big crash. Doesn't really matter what the frame is made of.

Crumple zone. Design feature.
He got right back onto another single use plastic fantastic.
If it were steel, he'd have plowed right thru like a hot knife thru butta.
(Steel is the only frame I have broke)

Crashing breaks bike frames.
In other news, water is wet.

Banned
What a POS, the broken frame could have easily slashed an artery etc.. They should be banned from racing.

With a mighty wind
To my knowledge, it’s not yet illegal to ride the Giro with sword. The last time the winner of the Giro was carrying a sword was in the 1700’s. The goal was different then, as competitors had to intimidate peasants into inventing the bicycle.
Is that more clear now?

You aren't paying attention. The crash was not a result of CF frame failure. Maybe racing should be banned to prevent crashes where people sometimes get hurt.

That crash footage did show the real advantage of internally routed cables. Keeps all the pieces together for convenient cleanup afterwards.

I, OTOH, am happy to know that riding CF frames will allow me to live longer and enjoy my fitness thru the golden years.

Or, why this old, fat cyclist does all his racing in the virtual world.

Bike Forum has almost become "Why Bother.com" as every thread elicits totally predictable and generally unconsidered responses from a handful of followers. If it were not for the handful of informed and generally amusing respondents who occasionally weigh in, there would be no point at all.

Likewise. The one event I did last year that involved a large, fast-moving peloton had several nasty crashes. I very nearly got involved in one crash near the start when a couple of guys right in front of me touched wheels and went down hard. I was lucky to miss them.

Two decades ago I used to ride with a local club. There's nothing quite like being part of a large, fast moving peloton! It was a very well-behaved club, lots of experienced riders. But one day, someone who wasn't part of the ride decided to cut into the line and took down one of our riders, and the rest of us barely managed not to end up in a pile. You can trust your skills, you can trust your group, but you can't stop some clown from screwing it up.
