Addiction 2024.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh, I am. Sometimes.

When I first got the tubular wheelset for Mrs. Peel, I glued on (well, taped on, really) some 22mm Conti Giros, and pumped 'em up to 140 psi. The first couple miles of my ride were on reasonably fresh asphalt. That felt pretty smooth and fast. Then I got to the part where the fresh asphalt was, for want of a better word, textured. Like textured plaster on the wall, the kind they did in the 70s and 80 on top of drywall. I could feel every single 1mm high edge. I found myself focusing on finding the least bumpy line on the bike lane. So I stopped, carefully let out 2 *pffts* out of each tire, and rode on more comfortably.

I don't think it's so much that it's for racers, but it's definitely not for toe pointers. And it ignores crank length, and shoe size. I'm more of a toe pointer than a heel dropper, and I usually go for a 78cm saddle height with 175mm cranks, and these are 170s, so I'd go more like 78.5. With the seatpost all the way to the "Min. Insertion" line, it's only 77.5. I suspect it'll feel funny at first.

Then it'll feel funny when I get on another bike.

So precise! You must be a modern cyclist. I raise my saddle until I get pain in my achilles, and then lower it a bit. If I get knee pain I n
know it needs to be raised a bit.

All I can tell you is that when I got my first bike with 170s after riding nothing but 175s for 20+ years, I set the saddle to the same height, and it felt weird. Best way to describe it is that I felt like I was pedalling flatfooted. I did notice I spun a faster cadence, though.

Last week I was riding the Battaglin, and looking at Strava, I was spinning about 5rpm faster on average than I do on my other modern bikes. Its saddle is about 3mm or so lower than most of my other bikes. So, we'll see how the Circuit feels!

My BIL in Florida has been in the hospital since last Thursday with an infection that needed IV antibiotics. My sister says he's worried the battery will be dead after 5 days. Apparently, this is the second battery in a 6 year old car. I swear, I just replaced the original battery in the Dodge, and that's 10 years old! She says people in Florida always have chargers. I swear, I've never had a problem with a battery being dead after sitting for a week or more. Am I missing something?

It's fitting that this thread remains in winter mode, because (as predicted) winter continues.

Fla? Salt water corrosion if it's close enough to the coast. Acts like a resistor across the terminals and drains the battery.

I used to ride 165s (I'm short) but I also have some 170s. I've noticed the difference in seat height to be 3.5 mm and not 5 mm as one would expect. Then again, that may just be me.
