Bottom bracket - the bike has one of these, spec is about 290 grams excluding bolts.

The titanium Phil Woods mentioned above are roughly 150 grams. That's about 5 oz, so is significant.

Fork - the fork is aluminum. My guess now is that I would need an all carbon fork (i.e. carbon steerer) to get a major weight reduction, which would mean going threadless. Hope I'm wrong there?

Incidentally, I looked her up on vintagecannondale, this bike's original spec weight was 20.0 lb. https://66.147.244.179/~vintagm8/year/1992/1992.pdf

Just put as much carbon on it as possible, including wheels. Forget being period correct. Stuff back then was heavyier.

In my mind to lighten a bike just to say it's lighter without any performance benefit is just a bit silly. Lighter wheels may get you a benefit, however small, and is a simple change.

If you are going to ruin the look...I mean, reduce the weight by going carbon, there is no point in keeping the lead weight on top.
Threadless will save you a lot more weight than keeping what you have.
Lightweight threadless stem and bars are going to lighten up your bike a lot.

At this point, it's probably cheaper and more satisfactory to get a CAAD9 or something that has everything integrated.

Take off's in the LBS saddle box. I've picked up a few Ti railed Flite knock-offs for $5-10. Maybe I was optomistic on the weight....sub-200g easily.

What's wrong with trying to build a lightweight vintage(ish) bike? I think it's a fun project and apparently so do lots of other people. Sorry this saddens you.

How about you just lose the saddle and seat post and ride it without them for a while? Your bike will be almost a pound lighter, you'll get great exercise, possibly lose a pound or two yourself, and when you reevaluate your priorities and put the seat and seat post back in, it will feel wonderful.

I played this game on my Puch.

my savings were

different wheelset with DT revolution/alloy nipples
Unicantor out-Turbo 1980 saddle in- far more comfortable.
Alloy marchiso freewheel in
small bit of drillium on the seatpost-more for looks.
total savings over 500g

WTF! you got a 8.1 kilo C&V bike and you are complaining???
Heck- I would like to join the sub 9 kilo(19.8lbs) club!!

With a steel lugged frame and fork

I would like to loose another 200g but it would require spending a LOT of money and departing C&V components.

loosing weight gets more expensive the deeper you go down the rabbit hole..

We haven't seen the sun in our area for quite awhile. Weve been too busy scouring CL looking for flips to worry about riding our bikes much less worrying about their weight.

Carry on w your pursuit

I would have to find a 1982-83 Puch Ultima (or AD SL) 531SL frameset to keep going deeper.
that would shave off at least 200g
then I would have to give up my correct Campagnolo parts..(allready have TI spindle,RD shafts, and pedals)
I cant bare the thought of loosing <C>....

we should make a contest- who could build the heaviest C&V with correct parts.
(A Schwinn Varsity frame is the place to start!)

I do think questioning the OP (jyl) about his goal is worthwhile, whether in a ribbing way or a serious way. I don't think 0.8 pounds difference will be noticeable except for bragging rights. Same with period-correctness. If that's his goal, then he can say so. It's not about wanting to go faster or winning races (I presume).

here's a few ideas...
-helium in the tires.
-helium in a balloon, tied to your helmet. Make sure you're on the bike otherwise the weight loss wont be transferred to the bike.
-helium in a balloon, inside of a pannier. This might be a wash or even a weight gain because you'd have to add a rack and a pannier, so make sure you add as much helium as you can to offset.
-helium inside of your handlebars. Make sure to plug the ends really well. If you feel heavy then you're probably leaking helium.
-helium in your gullet. This one is self explanatory.
-remove the saddle and seat post. replace them with helium.
-remove the crank-set. That sounds stupid right? OK, here's where this idea gets good. Go ahead and replace it with helium.

here's another idea...
- helium balloon inside of your shorts. You get "lighter" but also the added benefit of a larger appearing package. Don't add too much or you'll look like you have elephantiasis of the testicles, otherwise known as "swollen balls".

the above ideas are free. I can give you more but I'll have to start charging you for them. Let us know how things work out for you.
