I live under a rock, and have never seen the Peloton ad. I know a few people who use it, mainly for winter training.

There's a few people (who share to the local Strava club) who only use Peloton. That strikes me as odd - not bad, just odd. Same for the Zwift addicts who rarely ride outside, but regularly race on Zwift.

It makes sense: spin classes and MMORPGs are popular, and that's basically what Peloton and Zwift are, respectively. I just can't get my head around why either would be more fun than riding outside (though if Zwift added rocket launchers and demonic boars, I might be down.)

I kknow what you mean...more Peloton riders, fewer riders out on the road.

Make no mistake Zwift is not more fun that actually riding out doors. But when the average winter temp is 0-20 degrees Zwift is a better option for the 4 months of winter. It makes indoor riding bearable and a bit engaging. I don't know of any cyclist on here that doesn't prefer to ride outdoors.

On a side note I am going to the Zwift user suggestion for a madmax edition, that sounds like a "blast"!

Put in a different way, it looks like you could signup for the $20 monthly option and user their trainer-led classes with your own bike/trainer setup.
It does but the service is very limited. I guess people who drop the 2K on the bike don't cheapen out on the subscriptions. I found a really good read on the peloton set up.

Well, Peloton seems to be a more streamlined, live-class version of Zwift. The latter is kind of "build your own gym room" kind of thing where people go crazy with massive TVs and painting walls, split screen studios, etc. Those who can't bother and don't want a separate bike - and can afford it - just buy Peloton hardware. Spinning classes are insanely popular. I also hear the ones where it's a dark room and they play electronic music (in a nutshell, it sounds like a rave on stationary bikes with with less doping than at either a rave/pro race) are wicked addictive for some people for some reason.

The Rapper (C-Rapper) in the background is enough for me to not want to buy a Peloton. I prefer real scenery, and my Trek being pedaled on real bike paths, and scenery. Stationary bikes, are so PT.

Actually, the rave version sounds mildly okay. I always wonder about the music associated with spin classes, though. What if you don't like their music and it makes you want to throw things rather than exercise?

I'll admit that I've succumbed to the trainer this winter, but one of the nice things is that it gives me a chance to actually get through some albums I like without the usual household or work distractions.

Geez, why not save yourself some money and go for a nighttime bike ride through the scariest, most crime-ridden apartment complex in town without lights on a Friday or Saturday night.

Ride your ride. (...and more power to anyone who musters up the gumption to exercise in whatever manner that works for them.)

If you wanted to spin without all the extras, there are less expensive, better quality spin cycles than Peloton, which are really on the cheap end of the spin bike quality spectrum.

I'm hoping that it will be (nice enough for a ride) -- in about 2 more months. Until then, anything that makes indoor workouts less brain-killingly boring is a Good Thing(tm). Some of you who don't understand the appeal have probably never done a 15 mile ride in single-digit temps, with glare ice hiding under every little drift of snow.

It's an OUTDOOR treadmill driven bike.
I live in WI and work for a utility, I know all about being outside in brutal weather and look forward to riding outside in a month or two also.
In the meantime I'll make do with XC skiing, ice fishing, and the inevitable snow shoveling.

Sorry, I didn't realize the discussion had turned to the Treadmill Bike. I always considered that a joke. For when you want to go for a run but don't want to get your shoes dirty? You have to admit, there's a certain degree of silliness in that.
