French Fling
As I stopped in to visit my friend at his bike shop he was demonstrating this bike to a customer who had commissioned him to restore it for him. The customer, an antique dealer , found it at a flea market in Oakland Ca. and bought it for $50. I'm sure the resto cost a bit more than that . The Antique guy had just returned from a trip to Italy where he had bought a huge bag full of vintage cycling jerseys . My friend really wanted to buy some. Unfortunately they were made for people weighing about 5 ft tall and my friend is 6'5". He bought 3 anyway and will probably frame them. ( and yes that is a Suntour rear der. Don't know why my friend didn't put a Hurret back there, he has boxes of them in the shop)

Very nice! I like almost all of the builder's choices, especially the green bar tape. Pity about the bits of white cable housing (I prefer the green), and I am right with you on the RD. As much as I respect SunTour, a Japanese mech doesn't belong anywhere near this bicycle.
I'm a bit of an Anquetil fan and a green Helyett Spéciale is one of the few bikes I would still like to add to my collection.

I don't think any Huret mech of the 50/60s could handle a freewheel that big. There's your reason.

That replacement derailleur is legendary and a big part of the 'old' Suntour history. Commonly done dealer service swap.
Nice bike and hopefully said customer retained the original derailleur.

A Practical restoration
should have French tubular rims of some sort and tubular tires, if going full bore authentic.
I cannot tell if the large cog on the freewheel is 28 or 30. If 30, then the Suntour is a good choice, with the narrow difference at the chainrings, a wide freewheel is welcome.

Huret Allvit Capacity
Huret Allvit RDs could handle 52-36T x 14-32T FWs. I HATED WORKING ON THEM but they had capacity. The flyer below shows 53-36T x 13-30T....
The French thought VERY highly of the Allvit RDs. It was their answer to the all metal Campagnolo derailleurs - as opposed to the Delrin plastic Simplex stuff. You could find top of the line French bikes with Huret Allvit derailleurs into the early 70's! GAG! WRETCH!
I'd like to find a nice old Helyett like that, a bit of history!
The bike appears to be from the mid 60's with the "Suicide" FD, way before Suntour was a player. Looks like a Reynolds 531 sticker on the seat tube.
repechage I agree, sewups would look good on this bike, an Allvit would make it complete.

There were Allvit derailleurs for sale recently on The C&V Sales subforum. NOS or nearly so..... and affordable. Not the longest cage, if I remember.

I've been thinking of making a five speed with Huret. I've got the single band clamp shifter and the sevelto.

Rather like the Huret "Luxe", but the latter seems better finished IMHO.
Was in a used guitar shop last week (wife's hobby, not mine), behind and above the counter was a display of Schwinn Krate/Picker/Stingray bikes for some reason; Allvits as far as the eye could see, probably the Schwinn-Approved ones. They all would have looked nicer with Nuovo Records installed... (I might have said Gran Turismos, like who cares about weight on those things, but the cage might have dragged on the ground )

That Helyett frame is the same as mine--lugs, seat stay tops, the original fork and braze-ons. Who did the restoration? Mine is not ever likely to look like that! I think it's kind of a club racer model--531 main triangle, plain steel stays and blades. Nice rig!

My first road bike, a bottom-of-the-line 1962 Bianchi probably made by someone else, had Huret Allvit and 52-47/13-26 gearing. It shifted OK, but I tended to snap a lot of shift cables at the gear lever -- high-tension derailleur or teenage driver?

Didn't Huret levers back then have a smaller diameter 'drum' for the cable to wrap around? Great mechanical advantage, especially the long ones, but perhaps more angular change at the leaded end... er... end?
