I have too much free time these days
What have you been doing that you wouldn't if you weren't "staying at home"?
I recently "retired" my carbon fiber road bike in favor of an all steel herd. Friday morning I caught that cf fame looking at me funny from its hook in the garage. There just happened to be a piece of sandpaper laying on the workbench....
This is what it looked like:
A couple hours later it looked like this:
Okay. That's great and all, but now what?
How about a reverse retro mod?
SA freewheel
Shimano golden arrow brakes and levers
Sakae crank
sanded mtb seat post

Whoa! Looks weirdly retro and futuristic at the same time, kinda like the Bowden Spacelander.

Does sanding the paint off compromise the frame at all?

not if done properly.
but ‘nude’ frames degrade with UV exposure.
There are marine type protectants to use, like waxing your steel. Short of paint or clear coat.
Nice project. Needs classic bend on the bars, imho.

What a certain contingent of C&V guys will be saying in 30-40 years: "How could you do that - it's only original once!" - and they'll name this treatment after you, too, calling it "droppingandlosing"
Personally, I think it looks fantastic and opting for clearcoat - even matte - would be cool, too. Bare CF looks so cool, and putting retro parts on the built-up bike is the best way to contrast it.

I'm sure I weakened it in a couple places. Stuff came off real quick when I started using power.

I would like to do something with the stem and bars. Can't use a quill and the clamp diameter is a problem. This is a $0 dollar project. Maybe I could sand an alloy stem, at least make it shiny.

I don't really know, but doubt it. They're pretty squishy. I just removed them for sanding and haven't put them back in.

I think it's HOT.
Should be voted #1 in the - - $0 out of pocket project category.
Paint the stem, get the right splash neon bar tape, a YBS chain stay protector and rule the 'Nude Bike Semi-Vintage Universe'.
White tires for the 'Cat's Pajamas' award.
edit:
even if you re-decal it - I think Spesh might reject your warranty claim.
So flame on.

I like it a lot. Not much of a SS guy, though, I'd totally do it as a fixie. It's so aggressively ugly, it's actually cool. It looks like it weighs about the same as a half dozen gnat wings.
And if you're really bored out of your skull, you and the Mrs should come out to my lake place and help me rebuild my dock. Wrench and hammer for a couple hours, ride for a couple hours, rinse, repeat (Provided you are asymptomatic, as we all are here.)

You're right, too much free time.
I've got some yard projects that need attention and could be done following social distancing rules, if you're bored...

Me either, too many hills around here. I just didn't have any derailleur cables to use.

Looks much better raw. That original paint job deserved to be swept off of the floor.

this is fantastic. the pervert in me wants to see some crappy rims with kenda gumwalls, and maybe some industrial pipe pieces can work as a shim to allow for chop & flopped sakae road champion bars? why are there no threadless->threaded adapters available yet - i sense a market opportunity for someone!
