1965 Legnano?
So it happened again yesterday, I was scanning my local CL bike section when I saw this "Old road bike $20". So of course I checked out . 1965 steel frame needs some work. One picture, looks like a Legano!!
I drove down a bought it right away.
The fellow said his father bought new in '65 and just wanted it to be ridden again.
That is the third vintage Italian to come my way in the last four months!
Anyway I am wondering if anyone knows what model it is and it would have been originally equipt with as I intend to restore it as close to original as I can (not finish wise, just gear)
Looks like the stem, bars, brakes, headset, cranks and shifters are original.
Here are some pictures of it as received.

congratulations on this most excellent find
date given looks right on
wonderful that it is so all original; from what can be seen in photos appears only rear mech and saddle have been changed from what would have been there ex-works
lots of Legnano information here -

Corsa, from the dropouts, likely Falk tubing. Does it have a split in the front of the seatlug (likely no)?
Looks like a Simplex front (not original) and a Shimano rear (NOT original).
Worth at least one Jackson.

original gear ensemble may have been Campag Gran Sport
shift levers appear Campag
what are hubs? front looks like it might be Simplex (of Italy)
the Campag pedals are likely an upgrade from the Sheffield originals

$20!!?? GREAT find for you! The seatpost bolt and head badge are worth way more than that.
If you want original derailleurs you be paying dearly for those. I am far from a Campy expert but they may have been 1st gen Record on that bike? Wander around the Condorino site, a lot of info there.

Thanks for the input all.
I have a set of Grand Sport derailleurs on the '61 Olmo Special I may move to this one. The Olmo is in missing the forks anyway.
I also have a 27" wheelset with Record low flange hubs that came off a late '60s Falcon I think I might use.

according to the serial registry the cycle's number of FL631_ indicates it would have been manufactured in the year 1963 or 1964, which is quite plausible for a 1965 date of purchase new

That wonderful find looks a lot like my 1968 Legnano Gran Premio. Perhaps that is the model...
Although mine sports the higher quality Campagnolo rear drops and an upgraded transmission (a few other upgrades also)...
I just happen to have what might be an appropriate Campagnolo transmission for the bike, front derailleur, rear derailleur and shifter set...

In the 1963 Legnano catalog there are 3 tiers of road bikes, top to bottom models - Olimpiade, Gran Premio and Mezza Corsa.
The Olimpiade has forged dropouts and would have a Campagnolo crank. The Mezza Corsa had no chrome. So yours looks like a Gran Premio. Interesting that Randy's has forged dropouts.
Your RD is wrong. Would have been a Gran Sport. The FD should be the same, I can't tell from your picture though. And please move the shifters up off the decal, so wrong.

All the pics of GPs on the condorino site look to have forged dropouts.

The one I'm working on has chrome stays (and fork), serial (FM6883) is not very far from the op's, same dropouts, and there is no way it is a GP or Olympiade as it weighs just under 7 lbs for the frame and fork.

was also puzzled by the presence of the stamped dropouts on the subject machine
have had five 1960's era GP's pass through me workshop and all exhibited the Campag 1010 forged dropouts paired with stamped fork ends
one possible cause for the variation here could be parts shortage and a case of using up what was in the bin
was also slightly surprised by the three-arm Magistroni chainset as tend of think of the GP's of this era as coming through with the "Y" chainset
checked over at condorino where there are exhibited two 1961 GP's - one kitted with the Y chainset and one with a standard three-arm
so evidently Bozzi went back and forth in their use...
also shown is a 1964 GP which wears a three-arm Magistroni chainset
the cycle was taken in without pedals and Mark writes that the correct pedals could be either Way-Assauto or Campag so the Campags on the subject machine may well be OEM bits...

So should I go with the Gran sport set I alvready have or would it be better to get the Velox?
The 27" wheelset I have is with Weinemenn rims so I'm not so sure about them.
On another subject, does anyone have aline on where to get replacement hoods for Universal levers?
And thanks again for everyones input!!

Velox did not exist at the time of the cycle's fabrication
iab's information and that shown at the condorino site are in agreement that that cycle's gear ensemble would have been a Campag Gran Sport
when visiting condorino site discovered that one of the GP's discussed by Mark came with the Simplex hubs mentioned in a previous message, these were made in Italy for Juy by Fratelli Brivo (FB)

My Gran Sport shifts great, love it. I haven't heard good things about the Velox. Ever.

Rustines makes those hoods. Don't know of a US seller. Here's their site:
Le vélo - Rustines
Le vélo - Rustines
if you find a US supplier, please let me know - I need one more set. Here’s the Rustines hoods - this set purchased about a year ago.

Disassembled and ready to start cleaning.
Brought it to work and put it on the scale... Weighed in at 7 lbs with the Boulder licence still on.
Has anyone seen another one with checks on the seat tube?

gpdave - I just got the last set from VeloOrange (it was not listed on their website, but i inquired anyway as they previously had a few sets of Universal replacements). VO confirmed they are not currently stocking Rustines products. Not sure who else in USA may import Rustine's.
if you find a US supplier, please let me know - I need one more set. Here’s the Rustines hoods - this set purchased about a year ago.

My 1964 Roma Olympiade, mostly original.
Roma Olympiad drivetrain.
1961 Gran Premio as bought
Gran Premio with steel crank.
Gran Premio shifters,
Gran Turismo RD on Gran Premio,
I've had my Legnano Roma Olympia since new in 1964. It is mostly original, with all Campy (except Universal 62 centerpulls and levers). It came with alloy Campy Strada Crank, steel quill pedals and clips, steel Gran Sport rear derailleur, Campy front (never sure on model type, Record?), Campy bar end shifters, Ambrosio stem (longer reach Nitto now), Regina (I think) 5 speed freewheel, now 6 speed. The original wheels were high flange Legnano branded Campy with Red Label Fiamme sew up rims, clinchers now. The handle bars are Ambrosio, also Legnano branded. Saddle was a Brooks B17, narrow rail, Campy embossed leather cover, since deceased, replaced by modern B17. These are great bikes.
I also came across a Gran Premio, 1961, with steel crank, not Legnano branded, Campy Gran Turismo long reach RD, Campy Record FD, Campy downtube shifters, Ballila side pull brakes (!). Though too small for me, I got a great deal, couldn't pass it up. It was a fun little bike, but I couldn't make it fit, so I sold it on. Good luck with yours. Here are a few reference pictures.
