I have a Super Course that's scheduled for a grocery getter, perfect frame to do this! What kind of generator hub are you using?

Btw I was in Detroit on new years day a few years ago. Nothing was open. Out here in the sticks.... Peoria IL. Plenty of businesses are open new years day.

Old bikes with room for fenders make great commuters. I have a 70s era Peugeot UE 8 I've been meaning to turn onto a flat bar commuter for a while. The bike came stock with a quality rack, fenders, and a generator. I actually prefer USB lights and a blinky for commuting as they don't stay on the bike.

Yep, that is a cool old grocery getter. The paint looks great with the chrome on the frame. I love the colour. I like the Sturmey Archer three speed set up on that. What shifter is that. From the pictures it does not look like the tradition S-A shifter. I also like the three pin crank. I wouldn't actually call it a grocery getter even if that is it's current use. It looks like a great all arounder.
I did a similar thing on my Lampert. 27" wheels with a three speed.
I like the shifter cable routing down to the bottom bracket, however for me, with my big, clunky shoes, it hits the cable. I don't know if that is an issue for you. I re-routed mine up to the seat cluster. Picture to come.

I just finished this one last week. It's the most versatile bike set up I ever did. I have had the bike since it was new in 2006. I have a 46/34 and 11-32 on it, but am going to try 46/38. It is really flat here, but a lot of wind.

I take my bike inside, only once did a super market floor manager get bent.

52telecaster I really love the way you did the cotterless cranks - looks so much like the appropriate cottered crank with the benefit of alloy and no cotters.

I commuted on this today and yesterday. It's a 1975 Viscount ten-speed, converted to fixie. A few years ago, I built it up with an S3X 3-speed fixed gear hub. It was fun but it was not great, so I passed the hub on. Now the bike weighs only around 22 lbs. It's my cheapo beater bike, and I like it. There is a bell on the handlebar end.

I've kept the chainring only because it looks so cool. Why don't others make chainrings with round holes? It's 52x19. I used this bike in some bike polo games, and the gearing is much too high. I might want to get back into bike polo, and I need a lower ratio and probably a freewheel, so I'll have to put the Viscount chainring into my parts bin.

My 78 Motobecane Super Mirage errand bike. $50 off Craigslist, with some swap-outs and additions from the proverbial box of crap.
I've got some cheapo security bolts/skewers on the wheels and seatpost/binder that augment the U-lock I use. Also, different types of bolts on the racks (phillips, slotted, hex, etc), just to make it more of a pain in the ass to try and grab them.
Not that visible here, but the frame is covered with a zillion scratches, which are immediately apparent in person.
