I think you might have been had.
If you look very closely at the top tube and downtube right near the head tube, it looks like it might have been in a front end crash.

Found an interesting crank, new chain, new grips, laced shimano rsx hubs with some old beretta rims, challenge strada bianca tires, and replaced the saddle with a san marco linea, lighter and more comfy...
