For whatever strange reason, I get more comments on this than anything else I ride...

Who wants to look at an all black bike??
It's the colors and CHROME that drive the crowd wild, especially the 50s cars. But yah, it's the memories and saying my dad or neighbor had one of those.
The second last guy I spoke to, had a 1973 Peugeot. I said my friend had exactly the same bike, and I thought maybe it was his bike.
Then the last ride before snow, a tall guy rode a Surly Midnight Special by me. I said have you done a tour yet? I thought it was a LHT. So we were going the same way and he wanted to learn about my Rohloff special and he took pics. So we talked and then we found out we lived 2 blocks apart and maybe we'll go for some rides next spring with his other buddy.
The only thing I ever wanted to do with a drop dead UGLY MTB is throw them under the bus. LOL.

Yea the old “they don’t build them like they used to” saw is crap.
Machining and engineering have gotten so good that you can go 6-10,000 on oil and your #6,000 symbol of America gets 30+ MPG. That doesn’t make any of it beautiful but they are better built for sure.

Remember this 50 years from now as today's designs are considered crude. Every generation has its limits based on the advancements in technology. For example there is nothing crude about the Titanic, in fact it was considered an engineering accomplishment at the time, and still is considered as such. Aside from the armor issue it had, the thing was an outstanding piece of architecture and used the latest maritime engineering. Not crude, simply limited by technology.

My city has a high bridge built the same time and same way as the Titanic. It won't be sinking for another 50 years.
Cotter cranks and rod brakes were also crude for 70+ years.

Current bikes are really better in every measurable way. If I am going on a long, hilly ride, no way am I riding one of my steel bikes from the 70's.
But new bikes look so...industrial. Black on black. No accent colors. And my 70's Campy record stuff is beautiful compared to my 2015 Ultegra, even if they don't work nearly as well.
Lots of people want to talk about my 1968ish Paramount.....

The all-black trend in carbon bikes probably won't last much longer. Bike manufacturers undoubtedly keep an eye on the automotive industry, and the suddenish change from cars being offered almost exclusively in black, silver, gray, and white to their showing up at dealerships and on the street in the kind of candy-color paint jobs previously seen only in hot rod shows means that bikes are bound to begin to go the same route.
