Has anyone here cut back on long rides in order to diversify your fitness life?

As far as switching up the types of rides for fitness reasons, quit worrying about what type of ride as long as it is fun and you are done.

I’ve cut back a lot on cycling this year, mostly as I want to get my swim fitness improved, as well I want to kayak more. I am past the age where I want to do 2 or more activities in a day, I did that last week, kayaked for over an hour, then swam 30 minutes late afternoon. I was very tired the next day, took it off, I could do 2 activities in a day when I was 35, much harder at 68. I do want to get the swim yardage in as we’ll need to kayak as I have a my
Multi day trip kayaking in August, want to be in shape for that. Thus cycling gets to be 3rd priority.

Absolutely.
Everybody has a certain energy budget on a daily or weekly basis. We can go into a shorter term debt that will eventually require payment (rest).
As an example, today would be a 3-4 hour ride on my schedule but I have a 90 minute ice hockey game tonight. If I really cared about the game, I would not have done intervals yesterday on my bike since ice hockey is like a HIIT session but worse. So, I'll keep today's ride to 2 hours.
If I go for a 3 hour hike, there is no need to go on a 3 hour bike ride that day for instance.

I'm with Indy. Let's give Billy D's plan a try and cut this thing's food supply.

Tradeoff optimization? Not sure about that. Probably improves your cycling. When I have done a lot of distance hiking, it seems my cycling endurance improves. I've been doing a lot of ice skating (hockey) lately and some of my cycling has improved a lot. The key is probably managing the total chronic training load and estimating that load on the extracurricular training

My 2017 unsupported tour out west No whining. (Okay. Maybe a little, but if a cyclist whines in the woods and there is no one else to hear it, has he really whined? ) No walking. 😸

This is the photo you posted in your "I don't know how to sit on a bike saddle" thread. It is not a BMC SLR01:
