Forty some years ago, during the summers of my sophomore and junior years of high school, I’d ride a bike exactly like this from the time I got up in the morning until Star Trek came on after the 10:00 news. I’d ride every brick and pothole riddled street of my little town or the county roads to a couple of other small communities. Occasionally I would throw it in the back of my car and take it to ride a bike and running trail that led to this very duck pond. And a picture of me riding it through the halls of my school made it into my senior yearbook.
During a city wide cleanup about 30 years ago, I decided it was time to be done with it. I didn't have time to ride it with a young and growing family of three boys, and I couldn't even afford to put tires on it. Looking in my rear view mirror I saw a city worker pull it off the pile I had just put it on at the dump and I immediately felt regret. A few years ago I started checking facebook marketplace and Craigslist for another one. And I acquired two nice old Takaras from the same timeframe as the one I had, and while nice, just not the same.
But a few weeks ago, I found a bike exactly like the one I had in high school. A burgundy Takara 960 Deluxe Touring with all the original parts. I don’t think I will be riding it down any school hallways, but today I test rode it after a complete rebuild to the duck pond I would ride to four decades ago. I almost felt 18 again.

I bought this Madone SL7 2022 new out of the box two weeks ago. I have almost 200 miles on it now and each time I take it out for a ride I'm liking it more and more. Initially, I didn't see the hype in the Di2 electronic shifting compared to my TCR which has Ultegra 11speed mechanical. However, after using the Di2 for two weeks and seeing the other programming benefits, I'm a believer and really think its slick. Disk brakes are noticeably better on the decents over my carbon road wheels on the TCR with rim brakes.

Does ice count? I took this photo in 1980 on Lake Superior in Copper Harbor, MI. The bike is my custom-built Assenmacher (Columbus KL tubing and full Super Record gruppo).

Ugly water - ugly situation
15 miles into a 35 mile destination ride for ice cream with Lynn & Lou and my rear hub cracks and the wheel is locked up tight. Placed the call of shame to my wife who's teaching at a school not too far away. Of course her getting ice cream was part of the toll . Luckily she could get away just long enough to get me back to the start.
Time to kill, and thought of this thread and found some water. Not much to look at but it was a beautiful cool fall day.

My bike on the bridge at Lock #12 on the Farmington Canal rail trail in Cheshire, CT. The canal, which ran south to north through Connecticut to Massachusetts, opened for horse pulled barges in 1828. In 1848 a rail line alongside the canal replaced barge traffic, operating until the 1980s.
Lock #12 on the canal (photo) has been restored as well as the gatekeepers house. A museum about the canal on site is currently closed. The Farmington Canal Trail is part of the East Coast Greenway and is approximately 50 miles long starting in New Haven, CT and continuing into Massachusetts to the Southwick rail trail.

Took a trip up the Eastern Shore
I made stops in Ocean City, MD, Rehoboth Beach, DE, and Cape May, NJ, with my recent acquisition; a 1987 Raleigh Technium Tri Lite. Swapped out the Santé brakes and downtube shifters, mismatched derailleurs, too narrow handlebars and too short stem, for Ultegra F&R derailleurs, Nitto Olympiade handlebars, 130mm Ritchey stem, and Microshift 2x8 brifters. B-17 saddle. I didn't have complimentary handlebar tape, so I went without pending its arrival. Ultegra crankset arrived today. I rode the length of the boardwalks in Rehoboth Beach and Cape May.

That picture from TrailLink shows that it is just north of Cornwall Ave., but I headed South from there in 2017.
Is the scenery nice when heading North from there?

My son did a Duathlon yesterday at the Olympic rowing lake at Dorney near Windsor. You can just about make out his bike if you look really closely.

I have a buddy training for a marathon so I got out on the C&O trail the other day. The 20ish miles I rode the trail make me want to ride it from beginning to end
