About Guidance Method of Edge 705.
Hi. everybody.
I have a question about Guidance Method in routing setting of Edge 705.
What function is Prompted, Follow Road, or Off Road.
I found an official manual for Edge 705 on Web.
I can't past URL yet. so I will past test on manual.
-----------------------------
Routing
Press menu > select Settings >
Routing.
Calculate Routes for—select Car/
Motorcycle, Bicycle, or Pedestrian
to optimize routes.
Recalculate—set your offroute recalculation preference to
Prompted, Automatic, or Off.
Car/Motorcycle Settings
Follow Road Method—set your
routing preference to Prompted,
Faster Time, or Shorter Distance.
Avoid—select to avoid unpaved
roads, highways, toll roads, and
u-turns in your routes.
Bicycle and Pedestrian
Settings
Guidance Method—set your routing
preference to Prompted, Follow
Road, or Off Road.
Avoid—select to avoid unpaved
roads.
-----------------------------
However, There isn't written detail for these functions.
I usually set Follow Road. but I don't understand this function.
Could you teach me about these function?

“Follow road” provides guidance based on the roads on the map. The guidance can include the names of roads.
”Off road” is intended for when your loaded track does not follow roads on the map. For instance, in an area on the map that doesn’t show any roads (or for when you don’t even have a map installed).

You might check how old your map is. That device is from 14 or more years ago. If roads and bike routes have been added or changed in your area then you might not get very satisfactory use of the navigation. Possibly Garmin's current updated maps still work on it. Maybe you can update them through Garmin Express or the Garmin phone app if that'll connect to it through the wifi. You might be able to get some open source maps. But I'm also not sure if that model Edge accepts them. Another member will probably will remember.
For other stuff, like recording your rides, showing you how blazingly fast or sadly how slow you are, it should do fine. <grin>
<Prompted> I think is for whether or not you get messages telling you where to turn. Otherwise you just follow the course on the map.
Play with the settings to see what they do for you. Only change one or two unrelated things at a time so you can know what did what.

If he’s using an old map, he should try new ones and one that is free. (Don’t pay for maps.)
New maps should work on the 705.

Be sure to pick a Latin version of one of the Garmin options.
Oh, the maps that came with that device are not updatable. For maps from Garmin, you’d have to buy new versions. These maps you purchase from Garmin don’t include updates. Again, do not buy maps.
(The newer Garmins provide free updates for maps that come with the unit.)

I can understand these functions.
I usually use routing function by calling route data that create by Ride with GPS.
BY setting Off road, I could call route data correctly.

I was going to mention the map issue but decided one step at a time. (Who knows if he’s even reading this. Maybe, he’s already using newer maps.)
