WHAT are the CHANCES? 40 years Later Raleigh Prestige
Hello All,
Back in the day I worked at a LBS and had an opportunity to purchase a 1983 Raleigh Prestige GS from my employer for 10% over cost (about $450).
I have had it all these years - so about 40? yeah my math might be right...
So today I found one on Craigs not more than 10 miles from my home - same size same color and OMG the serial number is just 3 digits less!
My original serial number is 3CS1030 and my NEW TO ME Raleigh is 3CS1027 - SO WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?!
This NEW TO ME had Brand New Continental Gatorskins - so about $110 just for the tires!
My Original purchase
Just found today 10 miles away!

Nice find! I’ve seen one of these recently on Marketplace and it was located near Saint Cloud MN. Not sure if this is the one or not but yours looks great. What are your plans with two?

The serial number coincidence is more common than one might assume, because bikes were often imported in littermate groups. In my signature, see the two serial numbers of my Capo Siegers, for example. Not as close as yours ...

Yeah the owner said that he also posted in FB Marketplace - this is the same one! Here is his original picture:
They tried to sell it with a "For Sale" sign on the road.

Really obscure in that size, but perhaps that contributed to the serial number coincidence, running a batch of that size.
One of the photos above shows one of the cables run wrong, exiting the guide midpoint, flattening the cable, I think perhaps fraying it on the inside.
I actually use spoke protectors (dork disc), but you should replace that chrome dorky one with a clear plastic tasteful one. Unless you want it to be all original. If taken off, keep it for that reason.
Crank looks like Campy bolt circle, larger than 130, I think 144?

The example from today will have a complete tear down and rebuild - cannot wait to tear into it!
I have all the original components - so one will have the Aero water Bottle, MKS Esquartz Pedals (near mint) and yes the dorky spoke protector disc.
The one picked up today has some weird funky adhesive, hardened material that is very difficult to remove. So we shall see what I can come up with to remove that with. I am not certain of the bolt circle measurement but it is a Sugino Aerox - that I am sure of.
Thanks for your reply!

It worked for me with handlebar tape residue, like that's what it was made for.

That head tube angle looks very steep. Similar to some older Peugeot PX10s.
Curious to know how the bike handles...

RIGHT! -
Stayed up last night until about 1AM to break it down to the Frame and Fork. All components were snug but not super tight. Bottom Bracket was dry - but no pits heck no wear rings either!
Except for the super tight headset - Frame and Fork are still one. I took some penetrating fluid and let it soak for the day.
This one should clean up well !!
