Loose Super Record headset spacer

Loose Super Record headset spacer
English threaded headset. All threading correct. All races installed properly. Top nut tops out on top of threaded steerer, leaving the tabbed spacer floating between top race and nut with a bit of play. Haven’t seen additional spacers before but is that what is needed? Thx

I was unaware that there is a rule about additional spacers.
Use two thin ones and it will look fine if that is the worry

I’m in the two thin spacer group. On top and below one each. They will blend in the shadows. 1mm each.
If you ever need to replace the Campy headset, you might need the two mm in stack height.

Put a spacer in. It will look just fine and no-one but you will notice.
Another thought: did you use the correct bearing balls. Some Campy headsets used 5/32" while some used 3/16". The smaller bearings would cause a gap like that.

I have one Record headset using the fancy spacer and interestingly and annoyingly, when I cinch down the top nut, using a set of Campy wrenches, the wrench gets pinched and stuck so that I can’t remove it. With that experience, I would use an extra spacer before filing down the steerer.

Maybe someone else will own the bike in its lifetime and want something else? Maybe OP will get bored and decide they want a purple anodized Chris King headset? I can think of plenty of reasons to not permanently alter a fork when there is such a simple alternative.

No issue putting in spacers but I've got 6 other NR / SR bikes restored and none needed them before - curious why this one has a longer-than-needed steerer.

The chrome steel one in the middle with all the other pieces you already have.
It should be perfect once you add it.

Technically you may not be.
No joke, the steerer on the blue one is a little longer so it needs more, chances are the green and white one could fit one too if you wanted.
Many are set up with one of each, the chrome steel one can be used to protect the fancy alloy one and or take up slack.
I would not cut or trim the steerer.
My example has one at the top and bottom for symmetry.

Thx. In your examples I only see one steel spacer or no spacer. I thought on the SR headsets the fancy alloy one replaced the steel one. When they shipped SR new, only the fancy alloy one was included? Looking at NOS headsets that’s all that’s included.
Presumably if you needed to stack it out higher than that, it would be left for you or your shop to sort out(?).
Still puzzling out I’ve never seen both an alloy SR spacer and a steel one on the same stack and all my SR or NR bikes are set up with either 1 alloy or one steel spacer…
