surly Surly
i got gifted a new steamroller 53 frame so i took my 56 Steamroller apart and put the parts back together on the 53.... but but but the cog wheel from 56 is way too wide for the 53 ??? ...... whenever i tighten the axel the wheel seems to be binding because of how narrow the dropouts are spaced ............ Surly says it's my wheel but the wheel worked great on the 56 ..... i'm still contemplating but any observations or suggestions or CRITICISMS will be accepted

What is the OLD (over locknut distance) of the wheel ? The Surly Steamroller dropouts are normally spaced at 120mm, so maybe your 56cm dropouts were spread apart to accommodate a wider wheel ? Either that or the dropout spacing on the 53cm frame is off somehow.

the drop out spacing on the 53 seems to narrower... this was an unanticipated FU and when i called SURLY i got put on hold and forgotten ...if the spacing has changed shouldn't Surly publicize that fact ??? and if I want to ride the 53 i guess i need to build or buy a new narrower wheel

Measure the dropout spacing on the 53cm frame. It should be 120mm. If it is substantially less, say less than 119mm, then it is either a manufacturing defect or the frame somehow got damaged and the dropouts were pushed together. Since it is a steel frame, you can safely cold set it back the correct spacing by spreading the dropouts apart.

Too many nebulous details here to give a good answer. The OP needs to measure the spacing on the dropouts to verify spacing. TT is correct as usual, it is pretty simple to cold set the rear triangle. Care needs to be taken and if it is spread significantly it may require adjusting the fork ends to make them parallel. Not a big issue in most cases, but necessary in some. I feel that is best done by a knowledgeable bike tech or someone who is trustworthy and has done it before.
Edit: Here's info from Sheldon Brown's wonderful site. Note the issue of what he calls "parallelism" which is way down the page.

So, I got this frame & fork and stuff a while ago. Going to strip it and repaint in gray.
I have a black disc fork from Handsome cycles a!d a black disc front hub. A pair of black 650b 36 hole rims, and a SRAM automatix 2 speed coaster brake rear hub. Going to put some 650b Bruce Gordon rock and road tires on them. I have a Surly stainless steel 49t chain ring looking for a 130 bcd crank and a threadless headset and a 25.4 stem.
Should be a fun ride.

Got started and I need to sand this first coat and spray again, Krylon John Deere yellow
I went with the SR crank and some unknown 49t chainring. SR laprade seat post with a Brooks Cambium C19 and an unknown clamp. Nice riser bars and short stem. Not sure i like the cross bar on the handlebars but?!?
I got a nice Deore front hub and some double butted spokes from a LBS, Need to get a good headset and a disc rotor for the front, I brought the hydraulic front brake from a build I took apart in Cambodia. I have some Vans Cult grips also.
I have a silver set of Surly decals coming.

Did you clear coat after the Krylon?
I've used DupliColor. Krylon. And for the link below, Spay.Bike
I also used a pricey 2k clear after. I was surprised how soft the paint is.
Curious if you were able to get a tough finish.

After applying the yellow I had to sand a bit. So I put 2 coats of clear before the stickers.
I did not put a lock nut on the one side of the rear hub and it did tighten because of the coaster brake which made it hard to pedal.
After putting a lock nut on that side it now spins freely. It is a sweet ride.
The paint is still soft, sitting a bit in my sunroom will help harden it some but I have never found spray paint to be particularly hard.
I also changed the 49t chainring to a 48t and the 16t cog to an18t
I now have a Acorn small front bag on it.
