These bushes were just waiting for me to come by on my last ride on the Cinelli. Took it out one last time, before packing it up and giving it to a friend

USS Carl Vinson - Port of Los Angeles
Hard to see in my lousy photos but crew were lined up across the whole deck/rail of the ship the from as far out as we could see them all the way into port. Fire boats came out to give an escort.

Nice! A long time ago, I worked for a while as a tender to a brick mason. To a mason, a course of upright bricks with the wide sides facing outward is called a "sailor course." This is a good illustration of where that term originated. (A course of upright bricks with the narrow sides facing outward is called, of course, a "soldier course.")

When I finished Navy Nuclear Power School, I shared a ride to Norfolk with a classmate who lived near me. He was going to the Carl Vinson, which was in the final stages of construction at the shipyard in Hampton Roads. That was in 1981.

I never liked wearing my dress uniform, so I would volunteer to stand watch in the engine room whenever there was a "man the rails" event. The guys who had families waiting on the pier were always happy to trade.
