Last week I had to stay late at work a few days, so on Friday I found myself with a bit of an unexpected early release from work. Having done a reasonably hard workout the night before on my road bike, I thought I would take it somewhat easy and just ride on our local bike path. But having some time on my hands I decided to do something I've been wanting to do for a while and ride the entire system from north to south. I live about 7 miles away from the southern terminus, so I left my house and headed that way. There was rain forecast during the day but looked like it was going to hold off, so I took the bike I would really rather not get wet - my 70s track bike built up as a road fixed gear.

Once I got to the southern end I turned around and headed back north. A bit slow going as the trail passes through downtown since it was a nice Friday afternoon and there were lots of folks out and about but it cleared up fairly quickly as I kept heading north. Coming up to Furman University a few rain drops started to fall, but I checked the radar and it didn't look like a whole lot was coming, so naturally a few moments later the sky opened up and I was fairly quickly completely soaked. I thought about turning around and heading home, but figured that since I was already wet and the bike already dirty I might as well just continue my ride as planned.

With about 6 miles left until the northern terminus of the trail the rain stopped and I began to dry out as I reached the end and headed back home, but a little pocket of heavy rain caught me again about 20 minutes from home.

Ended the day with about 40 miles in the saddle and a very filthy bicycle, but thankfully neither steel nor humans are water soluble so all was well.

I will say, though, I haven't ridden that far on a fixed gear in a long time, and certainly not with a gear as tall as I have, so my legs were pretty cooked that evening and the next day!

I met up with @davester and a couple other guys for a popular local route known as “the Bears”—a back country loop that circles a couple reservoirs in the hills east of Berkeley. Great company and great weather. We mixed in some gravel trails, too. Dave was on his splendid ‘81 Ron Copper and I rode my LOOK.

Another Audax ride on the P10 Talisman last weekend, a DIY 200k this time. Left home early to make the most of quiet roads, then a run into Bristol and onto the Cotswolds. Then down into Bath through St Catherine's, and home via Bristol again.

Nice photos @ExPatTyke You've helped remind me of a trip my wife & I took through the England countryside in 2015. Along the way, we stayed at a hotel on the Royal Crescent in Bath. It was a very fancy place, with Roman-style courtyard in the back and hand-written name placards on the guest doors. Bath architecture is interesting because they required the front facades to be fairly uniform in a classical style, but the back of the buildings are a hodge-podge of add-ons that often have no resemblance to the front. If you have to fill your bidons, you may find the water to be aequeosalinocalcalinoceraceoaluminosocupreovitriolic (I learned that word today - an 18th-century word used to describe the water in Bath, England).

Funny you should ask. I give my 4th grade students a weekly spelling quiz. For the final spelling quiz of the year to be given next week, I'm letting the students propose the words for the spelling quiz. That was one of the students' suggestions!

Went up to Folsom with some friends to ride the Johnny Cash trail. Talked to a mom who was remembering her son with a ride on the trail. Warm, breezy day.

41-mile shakedown ride on the Cherubim fitted with bags for credit card touring. Trying to decide between this and the Davidson, which uses a traditional rack-based bag system but is heavier.
They both ride exceptionally well, but the Bim has 38mm tires while the Davidson maxes out at 35. Neither is a bad choice, I guess.
