Angular contact BB

The carbon BB Shell in my Cervelo R3 is so undersized I'm installing a Screw together rather than my preferred one-piece BB.
Wheels Manu makes their BBright with two options, plain bearings or Angular contact bearings.

I've never used Angular bearings, anything I should know?
Do they really require a different preload?

Thanks

Barry

Angular contact bearings are basically the same as the cup/cone design used on bikes for over a century.

Yes, they do require a slight preload to ensure contact at the correct diameters.

OTOH the typical deep groove radial sealed bearing used on bikes have radial preload built in. With these, you want to minimize axial play, but not preload.

The choice depends on the design of your crankset. Unless there's some method to adjust axial loads, you'll need radial bearings.

FBinNY ,
I'm using Shimano R8000 cranks, so preload adjustment is easy.

Would you opt for the angular version of stick to tried and trusted radial ABEC-3

Thanks

Barry

I'm not going to look up the cranks, and take your word on it.

All things being equal, and IF axial preload is fine tunable and reliable, I prefer angular contact bearings. Simply put, I prefer trusting my skill to deliver perfect zero play adjustment, vs. a reliable, hard to mess up, decent axial play.
