This is the first I'm hearing this, but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. He was a big showman and made crazy claims and took insane dares. I think those things sometimes go along with swindling and violence.

Another funny thing about that ad as is that he pitches the bike as coming with an Evel Kneivel endorsed safety card. Like does that say “Do anything you want on your bike as soon as the idea pops into your head. You’ll have plenty of time to think about it later in the hospital.”

So it’s not quite vintage yet but Nike’s Magnet commercial is still my all time fave cycling spot. Love the fist pump to the kids. There was a moment when this guy and this spot made an entire nation want to go ride.

There is something just a bit blasphemous about the Rainbow Jersey making a Taco Bell run. On the other hand, Merckx appeared in print ads hawking cigarettes, so what the heck.
