Superbe travelogue! I was lucky enough to be taken along by my parents when they took a business trip to Japan in 1972. Wish I could get back some day.

Love the stem mounted Record shifters.

The decal on the top tube says 'Bonneville' I think, so that leads me to an automotive shop in Aichi, although going by the images on a popular map service, they have a fair interest in bicycles.

That in turn leads me to this Instragram page, but I'm not on IG, so I get no further.

All that is to say I think it's an after market custom job.

Great write up Rob, thanks for sharing. Those black Cinellis...*drool*

I'm guessing it's a utility knive or box cutter or X-acto knife, something in that family, but I like the thought that it might a light saber.

Next question: what on earth is "Face Express"?

A camera to photograph one's face; I imagine that it feeds the data into a vast database.

I regret that I was too lazy/stingy to go to this Eroica. Perhaps next year.

Could be. More likely a facial recognition pre-clearance expedited line through security. We are talking about the land of innovative techno nerds.

I dunno, but I had my mug photographed and also -- like everyone, I think, with the possible exception of "VIPs" -- had to go through security. Security wasn't particularly onerous, but I don't think it's onerous for anyone (unless perhaps something like a poorly-concealed box cutter has just caused the gate to beep).

Looking at the photos above of those (mostly) elderly bikes, I wonder if I alone am chronically incapable of doing a decent job of applying handlebar tape. (Yes of course I have assiduously watched Youtube videos of the process, etc.)

Thanks for the posts. Looks like the weather is much better this year. Did you take photos of the ride and participants? How large was your group?

Hard to take pics while riding on the WRONG side of the road while trying to hold on to cellophane wrapped bars.

I got a few.

Looking forward to your 'action' photos. Also, Eroica Japan will for sure post some really nice scenes on their 2024 gallery. Hopefully, they got a picture of you in some cool spots.

Great photos! Thanks for taking and posting them. And thanks for the Cinelli pics--they were supposedly a hot commodity in 1980s Japan. Love that blue Laser.

The gentleman you are with, I would presume, is Masayuki Hasebe representing the Shimano Museum. Glad to see that he is still active. He was a Shimano junior engineer in 1973 when he was a member of the Japanese team at the Grand Prix of the United States. Hasebe was a top level racer nationally and at the Asian Games.
After the GP he along with teammate and fellow Shimano employee Shimpei Okajima gifted me various Crane and Dura-Ace prototype/early production components to make room for gifts to take home. Hasebe gave me a DA crank set that he said that he had finish machined. The parts went on the frame that their coach, Takao Ono, built for me later that year in the Panasonic custom shop.
Might have to try and make next year just to meet up with them again.
Robvolz has already posted his identity but I need to check him myself.
Because my image of Hasebe is still a young racer with Shimano Racing in 1970's and 80's, hahaha.
Yes, the gentleman is Masayuki Hasebe without doubt, who is a curator of Shimano Museum.

Looking up the location of the Shimano Museum it appears to be a short walk from our family’s residence in Sakai. Will definitely make arrangements to visit if we are able to make it next year.

I used so-called Turkish toilets in France a few times. They are, in a way, humiliating, but they are also ergonomic. Yup, your body does what it's supposed to do, and quickly. We now have little stools in front of our toilets at home. It's kind of the best of both worlds.
